Hi all,
I’ve gotten myself into an E28 M535i fitted with a S38B36 engine swapped by a previous owner. Bit of a risk but it was reasonably priced to take a chance.
I drove it 1000 km home without much issues but soon after it started to drain the battery and left me stranded a couple times so I took it to a mechanic. The mechanic tells me that the wiring is all botched up which is causing it to drain the battery. He wants me to purchase a new engine harness from a 535i to start over but I thought this sounded weird and that a S38 harness from the e34 is what should be used?
I’ve sourced a new harness from a 535i now but felt the need to come here and ask you guys about it before because it’s not cheap and maybe I’ll need to move the car to another shop because this mechanic might not know what he’s talking about and don’t want to give money to a guy who won’t solve the issues.
Am I correct in that the e34 m5 harness is what should be fitted and then mixed with to have the engine running right in my e28 chassi or is it a 535i harness that should be reworked?
I’m completely clueless when it comes to wiring and car electrics, I have money put aside to get this fixed at a shop but not really feeling confident in this mechanic.
Thankful for help with this as I don’t want to hassle the seller of the 535 harness who’s waiting for me to transfer him cash to send it.
Engine harness should go to the engine in the car. A 535 harness will not have all the appropriate sensors and harnesses to plug into the S38. The car-side of the harness will be modified to mate to the chassis.
Yes, as I thought. Will collect the car today from the shop, don’t feel confidence in the mechanic to undertake it even with the correct harness when he didn’t understand what harness should be used.
Going to drive it as is for a while with a jumper in the trunk and then install an E34 3.6 harness and then mate the ECU to the fuse box with an adapter.
Thanks for the info
