I had some scratches on the passenger side headlight from a pair of ski sliding off the hood to the lens and then down. Scratches were catch-your-fingernail deep.
Body shop attempted to sand them off (then buff and apply UV coating back; or so they said) but now says they are done - can't do much more as it would thin the lens to the point of breaking thru... I don't think they sanded more that 1/8 of a mm (millimeter) [5 thousand of an inch US; 0.005"], if that. It still catches the fingernail, I'd venture to say it'll need about max 0.5 mm [0.2"] more to be sanded off entirely.
Any considerations for such endeavors?
- Are these lenses really that thin? I doubt it
- What about the UV treatment, can that be reapplied or it'll cause yellowing in the long run (car has 150k+ mi and no yellowing whatsoever)
- Anyone tried such repairs? Other considerations?
