Hi there,
I have a 2006 330i. It has been running great. Did a transmission flush 2 months ago, it has 89k miles. UTD on oil changes and maintenance.
I've been driving A LOT these past few days and yesterday something weird happened.
I was going approx 78-80 mph and suddenly I hear a clunk (probably transmission?), and the dash just circled through a lot of lights. Transmission warning, brakes, track control, tire pressure. It was kind of stopping and going, not quite jumping but, idk how to explain it, it was weird. RPMs went crazy like the needle was jumping back and forth. Pulled over. Waited a few minutes and then the car drive fine for another 25 minutes. Then it kept happening, I'd have pull over and wait a bit. In the end i made it home but only going 40 mph and not over 2kRPMs.
Husband is a car guy and he has some theories but i was just curious if anyone has some more pointers?
I am worried about the car, i love it so much and it means a lot to me.

Welcome to the forum!
Who did the transmission service? And did they know how to fill it?....and is it leaking?...and did they use the correct fluid? (There were two different transmissions available in your car, one is a ZF and one a GM; their fluids are not interchangeable)
And, of course, you need to read all the codes in all the computers, using a BMW capable scan tool (not a generic P-code reader)

The flush was done by Bimmertech, pretty reputable shop in my area (at least I hope so... went to them for some other stuff and did not have a problem). They fluid was the correct one and so far we have not seen a leak. People have said this could be power related? I'm very unsure. I will have the fancy code reader tomorrow (the one for BMWs) and hoping to get some answers then.
Maybe someone else experienced something similar and can share their experiences....or any insight really
Let us know all the codes in every module and we'll be able to offer some next steps! Hopefully this is easy and straightforward. The codes would be a great first step.

Okay this is what came up (for now we only have a generic reader)
P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit
P0700 Transmission Control System (MIL request)
P1727 CAN engine speed
Don't think this would help much as this is just the regular code reader (special one is on the way)

Replace the crankshaft position sensor with an OEM part (made by VDO.) Do NOT but a crap Chinese part from your local parts store.

Seen too many of those sensors just fail right out the box to even mess with them anymore.

It's been a while but here is an update for anyone maybe having a similar problem:
This issue was indeed the crankshaft position sensor and it is currently at a shop waiting to be repaired. I was quoted about $750, as a reference. But they also made me aware of some important recalls that I had no idea about (if you've got a 330i 2006, go to your dealership to ask about them)
In addition, there were some other issues (such as "oil profusely leaking onto exhaust") although this didn't seem to be related because this apparently has been going on for some time now.
Well, anyone here in the SW Florida area want to make some money ?
The book time for this job is 2.8 hours, on an E90. In Orlando, at a German specialist, that's going to be maybe $525. labor. The part lists at $153. Book says remove intake manifold, so the shop may have added gaskets...taking the total up to $750.
DIY is much cheaper, but I would avoid going to a generic shop, where they're likely to strip out the tiny bolt into the magnesium engine block, or use a crap Chinese sensor.

On the M-5x motors, you can reach it from the bottom, thus the 30 minutes to swap out. But yes, the N-5x motor you have to go from the top, and that takes time.

agreed with darin and chris - sometimes the price is the price. quality sensor, quality tech and a good shop that stands behind their work is worth an incalculable value....
