NavTools - Update Becker Indianapolis navigation map data

In Europe the Becker Indianapolis (BE792x) and Becker Indianapolis Pro (BE795x) are popular head unit upgrades for the E31 and other BMW models of the same time period. There's even a BMW branded version (BE7969) that was offered as a factory option on several BMW models (but not the E31). The head unit is not without its flaws but it brings some modern features in a classic design that does not look out of place in 90s and 00s bimmers (unlike most other aftermarket head units).

The Becker Indianapolis supports GPS navigation. There's no fancy large color display that shows the map and route but it provides simple and adequate arrow, text and voice instructions. Sadly Becker did not publish new map data for the Indianapolis after 2009. By next year the "newest" map data will be 15 years old and severely outdated in some areas.

Becker continued publishing map data for newer navigation units but these are all based on DVD, flash or hard disk storage. The Indianapolis was the last of the CD-based navigation units and that's a problem: Map data for newer devices is simply too large to fit on a CD. For example, the 2019 map data for the BMW MASK DVD Business navigation system is a whopping 1.8 GB file whereas a CD can store only about 700 MB — less than half of the required size. So it is not possible to "copy/paste" map data from a newer navigation unit to the Indianapolis.

    Well, until now...

NavTools provides tools to remove countries & voices from Becker map data to reduce the size and build new CD images! This way it is possible to make navigation CDs for the Becker Indianapolis with newer map data. Sadly it seems the newest map data is no longer compatible with the Indianapolis but I've had success with map data as new as 2019. That's a very welcome jump of 10 years!

    Download NavTools 0.3 (309 kB)

    Minimum requirements:

    • Microsoft Windows 7 or later
    • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 (installed by default in Windows 10/11)

In order to build a CD with newer map data for the Indianapolis you also need:

    • One of the Indianapolis navigation CDs (see text)
    • Newer map data (see text)
    • CD recorder and blank CD-R(W) media
    • CD recording software capable of writing BIN+CUE CD images (see text)

NavTools consists out of 4 tools:

    • NavCD: Extracts and creates Becker Traffic Pro and Indianapolis navigation CD images and Traffic Pro, Cascade, Cascade Pro and Mexico navigation RAW images
    • NavCF: Formats and updates CompactFlash cards for use with the Becker Traffic Pro, Cascade, Cascade Pro and Mexico
    • NavFLDB: Extracts and creates Becker navigation file location databases
    • NavTrim: Makes it possible to remove countries and voices from a Becker navigation file location database to reduce the size and make it fit on a CD

In version 0.1 NavCD and NavFLDB were command line applications. In the meantime they have been replaced by Windows applications but the command line versions are still included with suffix -cli. Launch NavCD-cli and NavFLDB-cli without arguments to see the command line reference.

The tools are not strictly for the Indianapolis alone. NavCD can be used to build CD images for the older Becker Traffic Pro and RAW images for the newer Becker Traffic Pro, Cascade, Cascade Pro and Mexico. NavCF allows you to format and update CompactFlash cards for use with the Becker Traffic Pro, Cascade, Cascade Pro and Mexico. NavFLDB & NavTrim support all Becker file location databases (FLDB).

Important: NavTools is just a set of tools. No map data is included. You have to source your own Indianapolis CD and newer map data.

    Instructions

Make sure you have a Becker Indianapolis CD and a source with newer map data. I tested with the latest Becker Indianapolis 7.0 CDs. Older versions may work but are untested. If you have an older version, feel free to try but I would recommend to update to 7.0 to get the latest radio and navigation software. You need only one of the discs — not the complete series — and it does not need to cover countries you want.

For the newer map data I can currently recommend the BMW Business 2019 DVDs for the BMW MASK DVD Business navigation system in the E60/E61/E81/E83/E84/E90/E91/E92/E93 (order option SA606). DVD1 contains Western/Central Europe, DVD2 Eastern/Central Europe. Make sure you get one covering the right countries for you.

You do not need original discs. I do not endorse illegal activities but a copy or even a download is fine.

Left: Becker Indianapolis 7.0 CD — Right: BMW Business 2019 DVD

Before you get started, make sure you read the entire article for tips and to be aware of the caveats!

    • Create a new working folder. For example C:\NAV
    • Download NavTools and extract the contents of the downloaded archive to the working folder C:\NAV
    • In the working folder create another folder CD (C:\NAV\CD)
    • Copy the contents of the Indianapolis navigation CD to C:\NAV\CD. If you have the physical disc, just insert it in your CD/DVD drive and copy the contents. If you downloaded an ISO image, mount it as a virtual CD drive and copy the contents. If you downloaded a BIN+CUE image use NavCD to extract the contents
    • [Optional] Delete the *.lwd (speed limits) file from C:\NAV\CD. The Becker Indianapolis can display the speed limits on major roads but the data is hopelessly outdated in many places. There is no newer version of the speed limits data included with newer map sources. At least not in those I tried
    • In the new map data (for example the BMW Business 2019 DVD) locate the big KN*.DB file and copy the file to C:\NAV. The file name looks like KNT174EUX05T01.DB or similar
    • Launch NavTrim and open the big KN*.DB file containing the newer map data in C:\NAV\CD ("File" > "Open FLDB File..." or drag & drop the KN*.DB file over NavTrim)

    • In NavTrim make your desired selection of countries by ticking or unticking the checkboxes. The bar at the bottom indicates the amount of data used on a CD. As long as the bar is green, the selection will fit a CD. The bar turns red when the selection is too big for a CD. At the bottom of the list may be a number of voices. You can safely unselect all because the Becker Indianapolis has its own voices in a separate file
    • Once you are happy with the selection, save it: "File" > "Save FLDB File As..." and overwrite the old KN*.DB (or KN*.DB_) map data file in C:\NAV\CD
    • Drag and drop folder CD onto NavCD-cli.exe to automatically build a BIN+CUE CD image in C:\NAV. Alternatively launch NavCD and add the files in folder CD ("Commands" > "Add Files..." or drag and drop the files or folder over NavCD), then save to C:\NAV\CD.BIN ("File" > "Save CD Image As..."). CD.BIN is the actual CD image and CD.CUE describes the CD image format for CD recording software

    • Finally write the CD image to CD. Do not simply put CD.BIN and CD.CUE as files on a blank data CD. That won't work. In the CD recording software you must select to write a CD image and then load the *.CUE file

If you do not have recording software with support for BIN+CUE images, try ImgBurn or BurnAware (freeware but pay attention during setup to not install additional unwanted applications).

If needed you can create multiple discs covering different countries.

    Caveats

Each CD of the original Indianapolis CD box contains all major roads of Europe. For example, assume that you are in Frankfurt (Germany) and want to travel to Bologna (Italy). There is no disc covering both Germany and Italy. You need CD2 (Germany) and CD4 (Italy) (Switzerland and Austria between Germany and Italy are covered by CD2 and CD4). However thanks to the fact that each disc contains all major roads of Europe, you can make the drive with just a single disc: That of the destination (Italy). Insert CD4 (Italy) and set the precise destination address. When you set off driving in Germany, you will not have navigation instructions until you reach the nearest major road. From there on up to the destination in Italy you will have full route guidance as if you had Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy on a single disc.

This is not the case with the trimmed CD! By using NavTrim you are really removing all map data of the countries you did not include. Thus if you made a CD containing Italy but not Germany and Switzerland/Austria, you would not get any directions until you arrive in Italy.

So you have to be cautious when making new navigation discs and take into account whereto you want to navigate. You have to make sure the entire route is covered with map data. If that does not fit on a single CD, you must plan a stop on the route to change the discs and set the next destination.

Here's the example again of traveling from Frankfurt (Germany) to Bologna (Italy). Countries in black are on the CD — countries in grey are not:

In none of these cases will navigation work with discs made with NavTrim because the route is not covered entirely!

You may wonder about the third case: There is clearly a path from Germany to Italy over Austria. That is, however, not how the navigation algorithm works. It is not a true pathfinding algorithm. It will create a route in the general direction of the destination using the fastest roads (typically highways). Due to the way the road network is laid out, the quickest way from Frankfurt to Bologna is over Basel in Switzerland. Because Switzerland is not included on the CD, the algorithm gets stuck on the German-Swiss border and is not able to calculate a route.

If you are determined to travel over Austria you can circumvent the problem above by inserting a stop-over: Enter the destination address in Italy, wait until the head unit is ready, then press the stop-over button (second soft key with the arrow-dot-arrow symbol) and enter a location like Innsbruck (Austria) to force the route via Austria. Once you arrive in Innsbruck, the head unit will automatically resume navigation to the destination in Italy.

    Here's what does work:

Including all countries along the route is obviously the best solution but that is not always possible. Sometimes the countries may not all fit on a single CD. In that case your only option is to make multiple discs and plan stops to change discs and set a new destination. In the second example above CD1 covers Germany, Switzerland and Austria, CD2 covers Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Set off in Frankfurt, Germany by using CD1 and setting a destination in Switzerland — for example Luzern. Once you arrive in Luzern, insert CD2 and set the final destination — Bologna in Italy.

Note that this works only if you can have map overlap between the discs. In the example above both CD1 and CD2 contain Switzerland and Austria. If you travel between two adjacent large countries that may not be possible. You may not be able to fit for example Germany and France on the same CD due to the file sizes. Assume that CD1 contains Germany and CD2 France. If you want to travel between both countries there is no map overlap to set a stop location and change the discs. Thus when setting off from Germany with CD1 you must set a stop in Germany close to the French border to change the discs and set the new destination in France with CD2. For a brief distance, until you arrive in France, you will not have route guidance.

Why can't NavTrim do the same as the original CDs and always include the major roads? Simple: Because the newer navigation systems from which we take map data do not suffer from the space restrictions of a CD, there was no need for maps containing only the major roads. Such minimalistic country maps are simply not included in newer map data.

So far no one has figured out the map data format thus we cannot build such minimalistic country maps ourselves from the full maps. Even combining new map data with the minimalistic country maps of the original Indianapolis discs is technically very challenging (and you'd be stuck with 15-year old data again).

    Questions and answers

Is there map data newer than 2019?

Yes, but it does not work with the Indianapolis. So far I've found all versions of map data for the BMW MASK DVD Business navigation system in the E60/E61/E81/E83/E84/E90/E91/E92/E93 (order option SA606) compatible with the Indianapolis. Sadly BMW/Becker stopped releasing new map data for this navigation system too, so 2019 is currently the latest map data that we know of that works. I tested map data from BMW Road Map Premium/NEXT/ROUTE but could not get it to work. The Indianapolis accepts the modified discs but usually crashes (automatically restarts navigation module) during address entry. All contain map data in the same FLDB database format as the Indianapolis and MASK DVD Business, but the countries and shared data are much larger in file size. Probably they contain additional data for newer navigation systems that is not compatible with the Indianapolis or does not fit in the limited working memory of the Indianapolis. Note that the inflated file sizes makes the data much less usable for a CD-based unit like the Indianapolis anyways because you can't even fit just Germany on a single CD... Maybe the "overhead" can be stripped but that requires in-depth knowledge of the map data format and so far no one has figured out the format.

Note that the map data does not have to come from a BMW navigation unit — other car manufacturers may have used Becker hardware as well. So there is a chance newer map data that is compatible with the Indianapolis exists somewhere. Let us know if you find something!

So far we've also seen success with Audi MMI 2G and Mercedes Comand APS NTG2 navigation discs but both have not seen updates after 2018. That makes the BMW Business 2019 navigation discs still the most recent source.

    Are there USA/Canada maps?

Becker never officially sold the Indianapolis in North America. That does not mean USA/Canada maps are impossible — after all the instructions in this article also replace the Indianapolis map data with that of an entirely different navigation unit — but it all depends on the availability of compatible map data. The BMW MASK DVD Business navigation system in the E60/E61/E81/E83/E84/E90/E91/E92/E93 (order option SA606) was not available in the USA but the Audi MMI 2G was. The North American maps for this navigation system are accepted by the Indianapolis but route calculation does not work. For some reason the Indianapolis always thinks its current location is off map.

If anyone has more success, please let us know.

Is it possible to select arbitrary map regions to make more efficient use of the available space on a CD?

No. While the structure of the file location database (FLDB) format is known, the actual map data is still a mystery. Becker divides the map data in countries. The tools and instructions provided in this article allow you to remove countries from a large FLDB file to reduce the size to fit a CD, but that's it. It is not possible to split countries or make arbitrary selections. So if you need only a small part of a large country there is no alternative other than including the entire country.

NavTrim shows voices along with countries? Do I have to include the voices?

For newer navigation systems the voices are included in the map data file (KN*.DB). The Indianapolis has its own voices in a separate file (SDB*.DB) and does not use the voices in the map data file. So you can safely remove all voices from the KN*.DB file to gain space for actual map data.

I need just a few extra MB to make my selection fit on a CD. Is there anything else I can shave off?

Actually, yes. It is unlikely you need all voices that come with the Indianapolis CD. By stripping of voices you do not need you can gain over 15 MB. To do so open the SDB*.DB file (in C:\NAV\CD if you followed the instructions) with NavTrim and deselect all voices you do not need. Save the file, overwriting the original.

The fill bar in NavTrim reserves 28 MB by default. That is the amount of data other than the map data on a stock Indianapolis navigation CD. A regular 80 minutes CD can store up to 703 MB but NavTrim will show only 675 MB available (=703-28). To make the fill bar show the correct amount of available space after stripping voices, you can set a custom reserve in the Media menu. Select all files in C:\NAV\CD excluding the big KN*.DB file and check the combined file size. Round that number to the next higher megabyte to get the new custom reserve.

Do 90 and 99 minutes CD-R work on the Indianapolis?

Surprisingly, yes. A regular 80 minutes CD-R can store about 700 MB of data. If you really need as much space as possible you can consider using 90 or 99 minutes CD-R discs to store up to 790 or 870 MB respectively. Please note that these discs are not compliant with the compact disc standards so your mileage may vary. Engine and road vibrations, age of the CD drive mechanism and quality of the media may impact compatibility. I would recommend slower recording speeds with 90 and 99 minutes media to optimize the writing quality.

In NavTrim you can select a different CD size from the Media menu to make the fill bar reflect the actual CD size.

Does rewritable CD-RW media work on the Indianapolis?

Yes. Rewritable CD-RW media is great for testing purposes but I would recommend writing the final disc(s) to CD-R as CD-RW discs are more difficult to read.

What about the older Becker Traffic Pro?

The tools and instructions presented in this article can be applied to the Becker Traffic Pro (BE47xx) navigation discs but sadly it does not work. The Traffic Pro accepts the updated navigation discs, allows address entry and starts route calculation but never finishes. This may require further investigation. Unlike the Indianapolis the Traffic Pro does not accept rewritable CD-RW discs so experimenting may result into a pile of wasted CD-R discs.

Why do I need NavCD to create a CD image? Can't I simply write the files directly onto CD with my favorite CD recording application?

The Becker Indianapolis and Traffic Pro are a bit nitpicky when it comes to the file order on the CD. Most CD recording applications do not give you control over the file order. So if you write a data CD with your favorite CD recording application it may not work because the files are out of order. NavCD ensures the files are in the correct order regardless of the CD recording application.

Why does NavCD create BIN+CUE images instead of the more common ISO images?

The original Becker Indianapolis and Traffic Pro discs are Mode2/Form1 (CD-ROM XA) instead of the more common Mode1. Mode2/Form1 cannot be stored without data loss in an ISO image (Mode1). The Indianapolis actually supports both Mode1 and Mode2/Form1 data discs but the Traffic Pro only accepts Mode2/Form1.

What is NavFLDB? It is not used in the instructions?

In order to develop NavTrim I needed a library that can unpack and repack Becker navigation file location databases (FLDB). Once I developed that library I decided to build an application around it: NavFLDB. Functionality-wise NavFLDB is very similar to navfldb_tool by TIK but with much better performance.

    What is NavCF?

After the Indianapolis Becker released a new family of navigation systems using CompactFlash cards to store the map data on: The (new) Traffic Pro, Cascade, Cascade Pro and Mexico. When making a backup of the original CompactFlash card you may find the backup not working. NavCF can format a CompactFlash card so that it is compatible with these Becker navigation systems. Any card of 2 GB or larger can be made compatible but only up to 8 GB will be available for map data and music files. So using cards larger than 8 GB is possible but wastes space. Also note that only SanDisk CompactFlash cards are accepted by the Becker navigation systems.

    Credits

NavFLDB and NavTrim would not have been possible without the work of TIK on navfldb_tool over at pocketnavigation.de (link).

Furthermore I'd like to express my gratitude to the DiscUtils project by Kenneth Bell and Quamotion (link) and the cdrtools project by Jörg Schilling (link) which helped me understand the ISO 9660, Joliet and CD-ROM Extended Architecture (XA) standards required for the development of NavCD.

Also a big thank you to the TestCrypt project by simpson474 (link) for insights on working with physical storage devices which was of great help for the development of NavCF.

Thanks for your effort in care-keeping old stuff.

Sidebar: I can appreciate the story of large map data on small legacy media, but can one-up.
In the mid 1980's I worked in Silicon Valley at a startup called Etak.
The maps were on cassette tape, several required to get across town.

Thanks for the link, Hyper! Very interesting story. It's amazing they could get it working with just dead reckoning. I mean, modern navigation systems use dead reckoning as well to help improve accuracy or cover for areas without GPS reception, but relying only on dead reckoning and clever mathematics is an impressive feat. Hats off to Etak! Must have been an exciting place to work.

And, yes, the cassettes make me feel less bad about the CD in the Becker Indianapolis .

A new version has been released: NavTools 0.2! Refer to the first post in this topic for the download link.

I received a few requests and suggestions plus I still had some ideas that did not make it in time for version 0.1. Most of the changes are not that relevant for whom just wants to update the Becker Indianapolis map data but may be useful to those who want to dive deeper into the matter.

The biggest change is that NavCD and NavFLDB are now available as Windows applications. These applications work for Becker navigation CD images and FLDB files in a similar fashion to 7-Zip or WinRAR for archives:

In the meantime I also received reports of success with Audi MMI 2G and Mercedes Comand APS NTG2 navigation discs but both have not seen updates after 2018. That makes the BMW Business 2019 navigation discs still the preferred option.

Sadly no news about newer (working) map sources yet.

Even though the map data format is still unknown, a statistical analysis seems to suggest the map data from newer navigation systems has a much higher resolution (at least twice as high). It is not unlikely the data simply does not fit into the limited working memory of the old Indianapolis... If no car manufacturer had Becker support its older navigation systems beyond 2019, I guess that's the end of the line.

This may be a long shot, but is there at any chance a US/Canadian owner of a Becker Indianapolis (Pro) who is willing to test navigation for me? The Indianapolis was never sold outside Europe and hence there was never map data for the North American region but I might have made working maps... No promises, though.

    You will need:

    • Becker Indianapolis / Indianapolis Pro
    • Becker GPS antenna connected
    • A computer with CD recorder and blank CD-R(W) media

2023-05-26 update: Unfortunately the North American maps do not work on the Indianapolis. It is possible to set country, town, street and house number, but route calculation ends immediately without resulting in a route list and the compass states 'OFF MAP' (even though the current GPS location is covered by the map data). Not sure what is going on. Maybe the Indianapolis firmware is locked to Europe. Bummer.

On another note: Is anyone willing to provide me with a copy of the Traffic Pro US maps version 2? I'd love to see the differences with the European CDs

A new version has been released: NavTools 0.3! Refer to the first post in this topic for the download link.

Not directly relevant to updating map data for the Indianapolis but a new application, NavCF, was added to NavTools. NavCF can be used to format and update CompactFlash cards for use with the Becker Traffic Pro, Cascade, Cascade Pro and Mexico. These are head units of a younger generation than the Indianapolis and store the map data on a CompactFlash card. This gets rid of the space limitations of CD but anyone trying to make backups of the original CompactFlash card or making a new card with newer map data may have found the new card not working in the Becker navigation systems. NavCF takes care of that and can make any CompactFlash card of 2 GB or larger compatible with the Becker navigation systems. Note that only up to 8 GB will be available for map data and music files, so using cards larger than 8 GB is possible but wastes space. Also note that only SanDisk CompactFlash cards are accepted by the Becker navigation systems.

In addition to this support for RAW images of the Becker Traffic Pro, Cascade, Cascade Pro and Mexico was added to NavCD. These RAW images are ISO images in disguise and split in 2 GB parts. NavCD can open and create multipart RAW images.

NavTrim and NavFLDB now have recognition for US states and Canadian provinces.

Lastly a small bug was fixed where drag and drop would not work in NavCD, NavFLDB and NavTrim for read-only sources like CD and DVD.

Excellent tools and write-up, my Becker is now running 2019 maps, thank you!

I did however run into a small issue. I don't know if it is a bug or if I'm doing something wrong but the files created by NavCD-cli.exe seem to be a bit large. Even if I try to recreate the image from the contents of the original Indianapolis CD, the resulting BIN file ends up being almost 100 MB larger than original.

r.fl: Did you perhaps start from an ISO image or the files on the CD directly?

CDs have a sector (frame) size of 2352 bytes but a portion of this is reserved for synchronization, address, error correction,... In case of a Mode1 or CD-XA Mode2/Form1 CD each frame contains only 2048 data bytes (Wikipedia). Thus per 2048 bytes of data, an additional 304 bytes are required to store the data on a CD. When viewing the CD contents in File Explorer you don't see these extra bytes. ISO images also omit the extra bytes. Upon writing ISO images or separate files to a CD, the CD recording application will calculate and add the extra bytes to each frame.

The BIN+CUE image format used by NavCD is a raw format containing the full 2352 bytes — NavCD already calculated and added the 304 extra bytes for each frame. Thus the BIN image may be around 15% larger than the equivalent ISO image or separate files, but the resulting CD has the same size.

Why does NavCD use the BIN+CUE format and not just ISO? The original Becker navigation CDs are CD-XA Mode2/Form1. While there is no reason why they couldn't, most CD recording applications do not support writing CD-XA Mode2/Form1 starting from an ISO image. Note that the Becker Indianapolis does accept both Mode1 and Mode2/Form1 CDs, so for this head unit it does not really matter, but the older Becker Traffic Pro does not accept Mode1 at all. It requires Mode2/Form1 discs. Hence the choice for BIN+CUE.

I copy files from CD1 (623 MB) and recreate the image with NavCD-cli.exe. This creates 715 MB bin file which does not fit the CD it came from.

I think you misunderstood: The BIN+CUE is a complete CD image. You should not simply put the BIN and CUE file on a CD — that will not work. You should look into your CD recording application for how to burn CD images.

    Which application are you using?

I'm burning it with ImgBurn as BIN+CUE image. ImgBurn ends in error as it runs out of space.

Which is weird to me because the original files from the original Indianapolis CD should fit the CD after being compiled into the image by NavCD-cli, no? Yet it doesn't, at least for me.

So, in ImgBurn you pick "Write image file to disc" > Load the CUE file as "Source"?

Can you make a screenshot of this screen after loading the CUE file and inserting a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc? In case of a CD-RW disc you can make it blank in ImgBurn via Tools > Drive > Erase Disc > Quick.

    For example:

Oh, I think I found what was wrong, and it was not NavCD-cli.

My testing CD-RW is probably getting a little bit wonky and ImgBurn SOMETIMES returns the write error. Luck would have it, out of three times I've tested it with NavCD-cli image, it failed every time towards towards the end, but later it didn't when tested with image ripped from working disc. So it seemed there was something wrong with NavCD.

And because ImgBurn shows free space to be 736 960 512 bytes, but image size 750 403 248 bytes, I thought image size was the issue. Making more images with various methods and looking at it more closely today, images made from working CD show the same size as thise from NavCD.

So I'm terribly sorry, NavCD-cli works fine.
