You know what's the good news around all this craziness for the ones of us who don't have M5s or even M62 M-sports?
BMW will have to recognize at some point that the E39 is an important piece of BMW history which will be kept on the roads longer than what was intended, for us meaning that some parts manufacturing will continue in smaller numbers, but not stop completely as it usually happens as cars get older. My biggest fear of keeping my E39 is precisely lack of OEM or OE parts. Glass, suspension, sheet metal, etc. is shared across most E39 models.

Okay, I've never driven one so speak without knowledge BUT with $200k burning a hole in my pocket this car would be so far down on the list as to not even register.
Tough, for me at least, to imagine the sort of wealth some have. I hope the new owner enjoys it, I'm sure the seller is happy.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
The moron that bought it will rat hole the poor thing away, never to see the road….. Morons.

It has not seen the road in 22 years. Why start now…. I just picked up a 2001 330ci convertible from a southern state - with hardtop and 172k miles. Not a perfect car - but it was 5K, and you can serve dinner on the underside. Scary clean.

+1 I put a filter in my garage to cut down on dust before painting and have experimented running it 2-4 hours a day to see what the dust on our winter car does. It really reduces it, maybe 1/10th of what was there before. When I break out the E39 soon it will benefit from a more dust free environment.
A great ending is all you'll see..

Had to check when the article was written when I read they spoke to Eric Keller... it was written March 2021 (he actually passed away later that year, rest in peace)
So this sale happened during the insane boom on used car prices in covid era. Overall, while the trend on these is still upwards, it isn't really a significant increase. Given where inflation has been at, for what a dollar is worth, they are essentially selling for the same prices as in years past. Of course, extremely low mile examples and unicorn spec cars will command a premium, but except for some outliers fitting those descriptions, in general the vast majority seem to go for 20-40K though since about 2021 (after this sale happened and while inflation was getting crazy) there has been an uptick in those up to 50K https://bringatrailer.com/bmw/e39-m5/
Given the reasonably high production numbers of them and how many were actually daily driven - there should always be an opportunity to pick one up for a reasonable price. I don't think good condition E39 M5's ever went sub-20k so as long as you keep it in good shape, it'd be a pretty safe store of value. Of course they don't offer as high of a return as stocks (in 10 years S&P 500 has increased about 2.5x, NASDAQ 5x), or even gold (which over 10 years has nearly doubled in value)... and they do cost money (insurance, registration, maintenance) so not sure I'd be buying one merely as an investment. But you can't drive stocks or gold on the weekends... and for a fun, practical car that won't depreciate, I'd say they are hard to beat
