    SMG codes

I have completed the build of my 06 M3 SMG track car. The SMG computer is from a late 2002 SMG CSL and the 06 engine DME has been reflashed to the car's specs and the CSL SMG computer.

I am getting used to a two pedal "manumatic" control package --- slowly. When driven sanely on the street all is well. But, when thrashed things sometimes get sloppy in the 2nd and 3rd gear portion (possibly ME) and throw 177 (Safety Concept 2 Clutch) and 178 (Safety Concept 3). These codes are shown on a Snap-On Solus. Next time it happens I won't clear the codes and pull them with INPA.

When the drivetrain was assembled, I completed the air purge of the relocated SMG pump system, and then "programmed" it using an Autel 808. So, no leaks, all the controls work, and the car has a few hundred miles on it now.

Any thoughts about these transmission codes? I have had no luck using Google.

You need to read the SMG error memory with Inpa or ISTA. Only official BMW software supports all SMG specific error codes and service functions. With this software you will also be able to observe the hydraulic pressure live value which is the most important information for troubleshooting. Once you have the codes, feel free to reach out to the SMG Society for further help

I appreciate that. I will do exactly that. FWIW, when the codes happen, the "wheel" pops up on the dash, the car stumbles a bit, DCS turns itself on, and after I push the DCS button again the SMG system seems to operate properly again. I have INPA, so hopefully it will happen again before my first track event and I will use it before clearing codes.

Hey man, I really hope you’re going to be my saving grace. On my 03 e39 m5 I did the clutch and pressure plate along with the rear main, through out bearing, and pilot bearing. I fucked up the sprung pressure plate and had to take it all back apart and reset the springs and put it all back together. It worked like a charm. Drove it about 30 min got some food, came back out, and my clutch felt normal but wouldn’t do anything. I floated it back home and decided to fuck with it tomorrow. Got back in it in the morning and it was fine. Drove it for about 200 miles and it did it again in the parking lot of my school. Pumped the pedal a couple of times and it was fine. Nearly 1000 miles later I was in downtown Charleston and it happened again in gridlock traffic. Had to drive it 5 hours back home with no clutch. It’s been a couple of weeks and it hasn’t fixed itself this time. I switched the slave with the one on my 540 (which is brand new) and it was the same as the og poster described but still wouldn’t go into gear. All my friends are telling me I need a master but I think they are wrong. I think either the pressure plate is messed up somehow or the pp broke. Please tell me you have some insight on this. Also just some extra info. It happened gradually in Charleston over about 15 min, it went from clunking going into first to me having to pump it a couple times to get it to go in, then finally I would have to shut it off to put it in gear. I really hope you have an answer for this. Thanks in advance. Ps sorry for posting twice, I just wanted to make it on a more recent post and I can’t figure out how to dm on this damn website.

I don't have a magic bullet for you. But, I would replace the master and see if that helps.

Otherwise, the gearbox is coming out again. I have not messed with E39 M5s, so do not know what the hoses/pipes to the slave are like. On others (various 6 cylinder 3s) I have hand pumped the slave to push air UP to the reservoir. Looking at realoem, the pipe at the slave coils up and that is a great place for air to get trapped. If a new master cylinder and clearing the air out does not cure the problem, it almost MUST be somewhere in the clutch assembly. Since the flywheel is a dual mass, it is NOT likely a flywheel issue.

I wish I could share more.

Hey, thanks anyways. I’ve gotten quite a few votes for the master so I guess I’ll give that a go and then drop the trans to see what’s messed up if that doesn’t work. Thanks again
