Hey Folks,
My in-tank pump is a spectra premium I got when i bought the car, but it's been getting louder and I'm trying to find a replacement before it goes. If anyone has a lead on an airtex, I'd be greatly appreciative, as the OEM BMW is a bit rich for me.
RockAuto had them for sale a while ago when I was looking for one, but not sure if they still have them. It was an Airtex and was very reasonably priced. Hope that helps…

Are you trying to replace the entire assembly? If it's just the pump your worried about, a chevy vega pump fits in the stock assembly just fine. Not so sure about other aftermarket assemblies and their fitments though
I used this one. Easy install. Quiet.

The in tank fuel pump keeps full the main fuel pump its psi is very low Airtex E8198H has the easy to replace fuel pump motor and filter, contact Airtex directly by phone and ask for it--Trico Group now owns airtex, Michigan., otherwise like what was said you can mod the current fuel pump with a new low pressure fuel pump like Airtex E2025-Fuel Pump or equivalent , I have a new fuel pump I bought for my airtex in tank assembly-like $15/ free shipping. Sometimes when the in tank fuel pump gets loud its the strainer that clogged, take it out and clean it and see if that helps.

Airtex is officially out of business, acquired by trico and folded into Carter. The BMW fuel pump has been declared obsolete and cut.

If anyone has a hanger assembly frame for the tank, let me know. One of the studs for the fuel level unit broke off on mine a while back.
You can actually delete the in tank fuel pump. There's a couple of threads about it if you search. It was added because of vapor lock in high altitude and very hot environments.
Many early models didn't have them.
I have two, one is dead, the other works not sure how well.

320iaman/ Randy,
Is one of those available for sale? I would be interested.
Let me know,
Lloyd
Hi Lloyd:
1977-1979 2.0L did not use in tank fuel pumps, they came about in 1980-83 1.8L models and a lambda system. I have two backup Airtex in tank fuel pumps with replaceable filters and replaceable fuel pumps and both work just fine.

Wow well TIL. My 78 has an in tank fuel pump but when I look it up on realoem it shows a completely different assembly unit than what's in there. Are the assembly units swappable between different fuel tank styles?
I know the PO had some stuff done with the fuel tank but I never dropped it and investigated it and he didn't go into detail about it when I got the car.. This is good to know...
The 1977-79 had the fuel float gauge canister only, if one is running one with the in tank fuel pump it would have to be wired in with a second plug, basically one power wire since the oem ones use the gas tanks connected to the uni-body as ground.
