I’m currently smelling exhaust at 3-4k rpm’s from inside the cabin. It’s pretty unbearable. The issue arose after having my stock exhaust pipe w/ o2 sensor, collector and cat changed to pass smog (thankfully did). But the car never smelled this bad before. I’m on stock k jet etc. Where would be the first place to start to tackle this issue. Ideally if there is someone in NorCal who can help me with a gas analyzer and an exhaust smoke test, that would be ideal. Any shop rec’s or garage mechanics? This is beyond my ability and am happy to come to you to help me figure this out.
If your smelling exhaust you have a leak in the exhaust system, check the Nuts on the exhaust manifold on the cylinder head( should be gaskets there) and to the exhaust pipe( should be a gasket in between) and see if they are loose, then under the car check the exhaust pipe connections to the catalytic converter if its a bolt in, past the catalytic is the middle exhaust pipe that connects to the muffler , they should all be copper nuts from exhaust manifold to exhaust pipes through out( not on the cylinder head though) and have the correct size exhaust ring and a exhaust gasket , if all those are good you have a hole in the exhaust piping , if the catalytic converter was welded in could be cracked weld.
If your not going to diy any exhaust shop can trouble shoot a leak in the exhaust system, call one up and ask. Midas, ect. test and repair will cost though so try several shops or contact the shop that did the
work, they messed up something and they should fix it for free.

Can try a shop vac and a cigar. Slight suction on the cigar and the shop vac's exhaust to the car's tailpipe (not a full blast!). Spare hose, tape and a lighter also required. The cigar will burn fast, maybe have a spare cigar too.
