After 20 years of ownership and tons and tons of cars I never realized the importance of the door latch buffers (51211809735). I have seen them, I have read posts about them, I think I even bought one for somebody at SESF as they did not have dollar bill on them one year but it never downed on me how important they are.
I went to fix an e28 no start today for someone semi local and they noticed my driver door not catching good. They give me a buffer and it works perfect now. They are so amazing I just ordered 10.
Absolutely! Those are very important, I'm guilty of the same thing. They're cheap too, only a couple bucks at the dealer if they're in stock. Those are even more important on the E24 since our big frameless doors tend to sag a little over time, or even when you have a corner jacked up. It's much worse than the E28's lighter front door.
I'd also recommend adjusting and checking for wear on the rubber wedge (Bump stop, 51211823487). It can wear out over time, especially with maladjusted door hinges and cause some trouble too.
Save the manuals!

I was about to take my car to the shop to have them try to adjust the doors when I saw this. Both doors were missing them.. no wonder I have to slam them shut. Should arrive Fri. Thanks for the knowledge!

I thought I would buy 2 for my E24 went to the dealer and they wanted $40.00 for two. Decided not to buy them there. Ordered some from Maximilian.
I've been slamming both doors for 2 years, bought 3 for under $10 delivered. installed 2 and threw the extra in the spares box. the doors shut like new!

You can make a semi-permanent fix by just wrapping some insulating tape around the metal peg the buffer sits upon.
