    2002 330i head gasket failure . .

    Automatic

how common is this failure after 130,000 miles ?

am looking at a used one and seller says head gasket was replaced

how much does this typically cost ?

if its not normal was the car abused by lack of oil changes or riding it hard ?

    thanks

I haven't heard of anyone doing a preventative head gasket repair, it's typically only when the car overheats, which unfortunately is not uncommon... Block and head are aluminum, so if the repair wasn't done properly head or block could be warped, threads in block could be pulled, could be very bad... If the car was immediately shut off after overheating and head gasket was slapped on, could be ok, but if you aren't sure of the history I would be careful.

Failure is not "normal" at 130K. But if these things overheat then it's very "normal." Nobody goes through the brain damage of a HG replacement as a preventative measure. That engine was abused or neglected. Parts got old, cooling system failed, engine overheated and was repaired. if it's really cheap, and you have the ability to pull the head off, time-sert the block, recondition the head (if needed), then buy it. If you don't, keep looking.

Pulling head partsare like $200+ (bolts, gasket, others) MUST MUST use new head bolts. Old ones stretched out. Need proper torquing sequence.

Seen more than one occasion where people confuse the head gasket with valve cover gasket. Worth confirming that.
