Hi,
I have a 2015 X5 diesel. I’ve programmed the buttons under my rear view mirror to open my garage door. I just had both my main battery and starter battery replaced because they suggested it based on the age of the batteries. I thought I’d have to reprogram those buttons but they still work. Is that strange?
I ask because the place I got the work done is a little shady and I just want to make sure they really replaced the batteries.
Thanks
I have never seen a vehicle that would require you to reprogram the garage opener after you disconnected the battery. If you have any concerns why don't you visually check the batteries for their manufacturing dates? You shouldn't take your car to a shop you don't trust.
Ditto above…replacing the vehicles main/aux battery does not erase the HOME LINK programming. Which is a reason you should erase the programming when you eventually sell the vehicle.
The only thing usually lost when you undo power to the battery are:
- Clock
- Sunroof
- Sometimes the one-touch window feature
Instructions for reintializing the sunroof and one-touch windows is is in the owners manual…which there’s also one built into iDrive. If using the iDrive keyword search…I think the sunroof can be found by searching for “GLASS”.

If its a shady place, I'm betting they did not register the new batteries to the car. Normally that does not affect function, but does affect the lifespan of the batteries. I did have a few weird issues when I replaced mine without registering the battery, but that may have been to a dying alternator. To register the battery you'll need ISTA software, or a BMW indy, or (gasp) the dealer. Not sure if INPA software can do it.

My Foxwell 530 does battery registration as does Bimmergeeks Protools.
Bimmerlink app will register a new battery, too.

i have a 2010 535i x-drive. I am replacding a 90AH 850 CCA battery with a 95AH 950 CCA battery. Can I register it as a battery in kind? Can I use the free bimmerloink app or do I need to buy the full ap? I apologize since I do not kinow how to post here!
The 90AH and 95AH battery are close enough that coding this change is not necessary. BUT…you still will need to REGISTER the new battery.
The Bimmercode app only works when you’ve purchased a working copy and have an appropriate OBD II dongle that allows the app to communicate with the car. The free download does absolutely nothing but allow you to play with the app to see how it works….but again….the free download will do absolutely nothing.
Plus, to REGISTER your new battery to create a new baseline for its communication with the vehicle’s charging system…you’ll need to purchase the sister app (BIMMERLINK). Bimmerlink can register a new battery…Bimmercode allows you to code a new battery that is a different type or different spec.
