Damn, that's a tough one. It's even difficult to find the Rover labeled versions now, the CD43 has gotten way out of control price-wise. The mechanisms are quite reliable, it's easy to find an E46 CD43 or an E38/39 CD53, but those faceplates are totally incompatible.

Have you considered the other alternatives? I'm told the Continental TR is a good match for our vintages. At like $160 brand-new (Amazon), it's a compelling choice. I missed out on the Cantaloupe Audio BT unit, still regret it. That looked like a great deal.

I bought this radio from a veteran, he was overseas and I responded to his classified 2 years after he placed it. Miraculously, he had just gotten back , that was 5 years ago. I screwed up the face plate somehow during installation so got another radio. Surprisingly paid $250 total for both. The second one is in my M6. Now I have this sitting around and thought I would get it repaired, I have the original tape player for my 635 but thought this would be nice.

So the Cantaloupe is not being made any longer? I’m pretty new to all of this in the last 3 years and have come across them a couple of times. Looked like an awesome solution.

I keep seeing them out of stock. I hope they're still around! It's hard to argue with the addition of modern tech into an elegant OEM+ solution like theirs. I know that German Audio Tech does a lot of work with old BMW tech, although they're moving slowly out of our 80s vintage into more modern vehicles.

I've taken quite a few of the OEM Alpine & Blaupunkt cassette decks apart over the years. Other than the drive belts on the cassette transport, they're very well built and quite durable. I'm not a fan of their ridiculous security systems either, that makes for a real annoyance. Right to repair should have made that security software open source long ago.

Waiting for Bert P. to chime in about Nakamichi's period correct radios.
