    Fascinating stuff!
quite lucky it didn't fit probably, do you think it is logical to assume that an s70 from Feb 92 would have motronic 1.7 like the 94-95 s70

should be M1.7, but you can see it anyway on the Bosch sticker on the Motronic housing, Bosch end # 352 is 1.7 for the M70, M1.2 is -156 for M70, and also the M1.2 Motronic has only 55 pins while the 1.7 -352 has 88 pins, the DME M1.2 and M1.7 are not interchangeable, they do not fit into the plugs.

My CSI has a build date of 07/93 cc88029 and a eml module bosch 0-205-000-023 bmw 12711403274 but it only has 55 pins could it be motronic 1.2? or is it possible motronic 1.7 has 55pins?

1.7 EML control unit also has 55 pins, same like the EML 1.2. I just double checked in my parts box. The difference is in number of pins is on DME Motronic units 1.2 and 1.7 as I explained already above. Do not mix up EML and DME .
EML are interchangeable between 1,2 and 1.7, DME/ECU 1.2 and 1.7 not, they do not fit anyway because of the difference in number of pins. DME is the same as an ECU, as BMW's technical description for their proprietary ECU is a DME

I believe the CSI EML is not interchangeable and is different from regular M70 EML.

Have not tested a regular M70 EML M1.2 or M1.7 module on a CSI engine, only interchanged EML M1.1 and M1.7 on regular M70, that works, if normal M70 EML module works on CSI has to be tested. Have no CSI engine for testing.

I've done this before with my own '93 CSi. Right now I'm running the vehicle with an M70 EML with S70 software (EPROM). This control unit has the Bosch part number 0205000015. I had also tested other M70 EMLs. I also drove an Alpina EML for a while, which was actually intended for an automatic vehicle. The Alpina EML had no Vmax limitation.

What makes you think that wouldn't work?

The CSi EML is identical to the M70 EML - but the chip/software is different.
The CSi / S70 EML chip will work perfectly fine with an M70 6sp car. It may present issues with an automatic.
The M70 6 speed chip will work to control a CSi / S70 engine, but you lose Sport Mode & the higher S70 redline cutoffs
The Auto M70 EML does not want to play well with any flavor of 6 speed... there are workaround / hacks to "seem to" make it work, but it does not fix everything... installing a proper 6 speed or CSi chip resolves this.
Bottom line, the units are the same - the chips are what differentiates the different part #'s

I am currently testing a proper "Sport Mode" dual map EML setup for M70 6 speed cars, complete with the "S" illuminated in the dash... this is a nice upgrade for 6 speed cars.

Am I correct in saying an eml module is the same whether it is motronic 1.2 or 1.7 except for the eeprom?

Yes, that´s correct! You can simply transplant the eprom from your original EML.

    Smile

EML appears to be slightly different
I wonder if it is just a later revision
everything appears more or less the same same values at first glance will look more in depth tomorrow as its getting late here at the bottom of the world in NZ
left one with mainly green electronical bits is the CSI one

What's with all the modifications, surely that is not standard in a csi EML?

Although it doesn't look like it there really is very little different apart from the colour of the caps etc
As far as I'm aware it is as "factory"

Well that appears to be sub optimal the m70 EML with the s70 eeprom fitted to it doesn't work not a peep thankfully it fired up with a bit of persistence and a huge amount of blue smoke iit must've flooded or similar once it warmed up it appeared to run reasonably
I don't know yet if it still shuts down a bank until I drive it but it probably does

Well finally I got the 850 parts car I was expecting a few months ago and I can confirm that the EML module is the same as the e32 750 one I bought so is unlikely to be of any use... Bugger

Ive managed to get the car connected to a working version of GT1 and it won't connect neither will my old peake scanner or a friends inpa the car also appears to be getting worse by this i mean it is now difficult to drive it without one bank shutting down on light throttle and about 2500 rpm
since i got the parts car i have since swapped the DK motors the fuel pumps and both DME"s after swapping the CSI chips all appear to have made very little if no difference
Could a failing EML module block or stop the Kline signal like the fibre optics on my e63 M6? that is when one module craps out it all dies so in effect you have no sound system/navigation/bc etc
Ive got a bid on an older oscilloscope which if i get it for a may tell me a little more about the k/line system of the car although to be honest Ive only got a rough idea what I'm looking for
other good news sort of is BMW has 37 of the EML modules in stock for the CSI

    just a thought
i do have a strange problem which may be either one of the modules ekm or gm11 drivers seat moves in reverse while passenger seat is normal direction doesn't reset like my old e34 did if you disconnect the battery it has come right a while ago but then the windscreen wipers didn't go at all possibly related??

Just experienced this again with another car, it was the Bosch Rotor that had been recently replaced - same date stamp of 1996 too... hard to believe that we are selling parts from the shelf 27 years later.
