    2004 BMW X5 3.0

2004 BMW X5 3.0 died and won’t start (is this wire bad?)

BMW was started in cold weather and started smoking through vents. Smelled like wiring or oil. Car then died and now won’t start. Makes one kind of loud noise when I turn key but no clicks. Can’t tell if starter or engine isn’t engaging. I found wire to left of engine that is black. Can’t tell if oil burned here or the wire is shot. Not even sure what this wire is. It did throw a P0111 code which was an Air Intake Temperature Sensor 1. Charged battery to 99% with no luck. I have pictures but not sure how to upload on here. Please help. Thanks!

    I don't see a picture attached.

Is there power to other 'systems' in the vehicle?

I suspect that code is a random one set by your electrical system shorting somewhere. Check all the fuses first (several fuse locations in the car) as a blown one could help narrow things down. Then you’ll likely need to get out the multi meter and start looking for current at the starter and working backwards. Post some pics of the suspect wire too, as it could be the smoking gun.
