The cause of the over-heating is due to a lack of cooling efficiency which is why the temperature does not creep up if you put the heater on. Either the pump is not moving enough coolant, or something is restricting the flow. It could be that the impeller has failed, that does happen - sometimes the plastic impeller breaks up - and sometimes it will spin on the shaft.

Or could it be that the flow is restricted - have you been using BMW blue coolant? Other coolants or plain water will cause corrosion that may block flow. You can flush the system as described below:

The Behr rads are complete crap.
    Buy the Nissens.
I have a '91 850i w/ manual trans and I am looking at the Nissens radiators. It's not entirely clear which of their E31 radiators is the correct one for the early manual cars. Can you confirm that this is the correct part number?

    BMW: 17112242138
    Nissens: 60747A

Of note, only FCP Euro shows the above as the correct part numbers. Other sites such as eEuroparts, Newparts, autohausAZ are showing 17111723468 – Nissens 60748A as the correct part number.

    Thanks.
