    Saving a 2001 740i sport

    Hi, i picked up a 2001 740i sport. it is a beautiful blue color and it's in very nice shape. It has 192k miles and needs guides....bad. They were already done not too long ago i believe, but something must've failed. Pics coming soon. I havent seen a sport model in such good condition. the interior looks brand new and the exterior is pretty much the same. I got it for a good price. He showed me his messages, there were a lot of others interested and some how i was lucky enough to get it. i dont know the color code, but it's not the typical orient blue color, i think it's " Biarritz Blue Metallic (363)." it's beautiful.

    ^looks great. it looks like that i think. picking it up later. i'll check the strut tower.

    Besides the timing guides, it needs a little rust repair in a few spots. The interior is mint, definitely worth saving. m pars are mint, good tires, new brakes, good paint, etc.

    Looks good. I think I saw this on FB marketplace. Man I do hate rust, other than that looks pretty sweet.

    Sounds like a good project, but watch out for the "little rust". It's always worse than it looks, since it probably started from the inside. Still worth fixing, of course.

    Yeah, im gonna have to remove the side skirts and dig into it a little and check for hidden rust, i dont think there's much. I'm no stranger to rust repair. the underside of the car looks great.

    Yeah, i paid up for it, but didnt notice the rust, i literally had 4 minutes to check the entire car out, it was at a marina in a dark bay that was closing pretty much right after i got there. with rust fixed and engine issues sorted, id say $8-10k car. it's gonna clean up nice.

    luckily orient blue is a common color and paint is readily available.


    It needs and engine. Some one must have bent valves i think. Not much compression. i dont think it just needs guides now lol, it doesnt even start and has low compression. nearly 200k on it , im just gonna throw another engine in it. i found one for 500 bucks.

    Total cost for parts is gonna be about $1250. That includes every single gasket and seal, three new tensioners, the guides and new trans fluid/filter/mounts/guibo. It came with new bmw coolant and an oil change kit already.

    The guy I bought it from reached out to me and has an entire front and rear suspension kit and a new water pump and t stat for $300, i might grab all that stuff.

    I think the car is worth fixing, it's just gonna suck swapping the engine out.

    I checked the doors on pass side and underneath the bottom trim pieces there was some rust starting. I removed the trim pieces and took care of that rust, you would never know there was any rust there. Some one put what looked like rtv on the trim pieces to hold them on, and that blocked the drains/flow of water and caused the rust. I touched up a couple other spots on the pass. side and im currently working on the wheel well rust and then moving to the spot on the trunk and then onto the drivers side.

    Snow hit, i had to put this car on hiatus. Idk I think I might part it out. Anyone interested in anything? it needs an engine-which i have. I dont wanna bother selling it-tough to find a buyer. I paid too much for it with the rust repair it needed; there was a lot. better to part it out to get all my money back. I really dont want to put an engine in it now.
    M pars, vavona trim, mint sport seats, cupholders, nav unit/frame/computer, valve/timing covers, bumpers, hood, power folding mirrors, gas tank, modules.,..etc...let me know..

    ^It's in New England. I put this car out of it's misery. It had been in at least one accident and was painted poorly + all of the rust it had + bad engine. The body was not good enough to justify saving it. I sold the m pars, the front seats, the hood and headlights, the cats and a couple other odds and ends and was able to get all of my money back from it. The rest of the stuff I'm putting on eBay. Rest assured, no good parts will be left on the car...it's basically a shell now with just the engine + trans, fenders and carpets left. If anyone needs anything else, let me know. It's getting crushed soon...just need to find some one to take it!!

    Don't forget the fuse block under the passenger seat. Those things are pricey to buy if a waterlogged one cannot be repaired. Clogged sunroof drains never go out of style it seems......

    Yes, the fusebox was mint so i grabbed that. I took everything of value. Only thing left was the fenders, engine / trans, trunklid because it was trashed and carpets.
    This car had bav sound speakers in it and brand new LED spyder tail lights, which together are almost a grand, so that was nice.
    Car got scrapped today...RIP. VIN#WBAGG83491DN89130

    Yeah, i was surprised how quick a lot of stuff sold. Met a couple local enthusiasts as well who also plan to keep their e38's for ever.

    One thing i forgot to mention is this car had bad guides but they were original @ 191k. pretty impressive. it had its regular oil changes, engine was super clean.
