I have had a weird squealing noise in my 340i GT over the last month. I have been searching for the cause, and found a video about replacing the belt tensioner, as that could be a source of the noise. Then the alternator completely failed and shredded the belt. The pulley on the alternator looks like the axel on that pulley broke or seized and broke. The question I have is if anyone has replaced an alternator on the B58 engine. It is a bit of a project since it is under the intercooler mounted to the intake of the engine.
I am able to get the intake pipe loose and moved enough out of the way to get the bolts loose on the alternator, but can’t seem to get the alternator out of the hole. Is there a trick to getting the alternator out of the hole, or do I have to actually remove the intercooler first to replace the alternator?
BMW instructions say to remove intake, intake tube, fan with cowling, and throttle body with charge pipe to it.

Thanks for that. Since there is not any mention of the Intercooler, sounds like I am on the right track. The only part of that I am not sure about is the ‘throttle body’. I assume that is the one connected to the charge pipe from the intake that feeds into the intercooler?
Thanks again for the assist!

That thing there.
What you are calling the intercooler is the intake manifold with built in water to air intercooler system. But it's an intake manifold first.
