    Deadbolt unlock not working

We have a 91 735iL with sufficient battery power, but all doors are deadlocked and windows are shut. We know there may be an issue under the rear seat with the fuse points but can’t get to them. The manual emergency unlock does nothing.

The issue we’re facing is no solution we’ve seen on other threads work for us at this point in time.

We pulled fuse 6 & 17 and flashers came on after we put 6 back in. (Similar to when you reconnect a battery.

The hood is up and we did try a power pack in case voltage is low but nothing…

Posted about this in another dedicated thread to the car but wanted to open another one for this dedicated issue

After some more struggling with a window breaker and some other tools, we failed to break even the window lol...

I read in a thread that the deadbolts should release after some point in time, but we took out fuse 6 relating to the locking system if I recall. However, we didn't want to leave the indicators flashing and end up with a dead battery. Was this a bad idea? Should we have left the fuse in?

Running short on ideas outside of a bigger hammer lol

try on both doors manual unlock procedure again http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Trouble/Locked.htm
Instead of breaking a window I would ask a specialist road service expert, probably cheaper.
Fuse 6 is only for turn light and hazard light https://shark.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e32/e32_90.pdf
And fully recharge the battery via plus pole in engine bay and ground.
After that also try to open the doors with the key via the trunk lock

Shogun to the rescue. Glad to see you. We will try tomorrow. Our new plan of attack is to go get a couple copies of the key printed and bring some pb blaster and wd40 to spray into the lock cylinder and try the manual release again.

As for the fully charged battery, it will be tough since the best we can do is hook up a jump pack. How do we open the door through the trunk? I don't think we've tried that before

insert the key in trunk lock and turn left, see page 8 luggage compartment locking http://www.e38.org/e32/e32_1988_manual.pdf but there is a remark: not when thiefproofing device activated), from trunk lock you can unlock all doors

And how do we know if the thief proofing device is active? I tried this today and it only unlocked the trunk

when you last time locked the car, did you activate any antitheft system by coding? If not, I assume thief proving device is not activated.
I just tried with my main key to unlock and lock the car = 4 doors + trunk lock via the trunk lock with the key, it worked on all 4 doors and trunk lock.
Try agaun manual emergency unlock, sometimes it is hard, as that function is seldom used http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Trouble/Locked.htm

I did not lock the car any other way than turning the key in the driver door. The trunk locks and unlocks as normal though does not trigger the central locking. We are seeing things about really working the emergency unlock hard though probably not hard enough. The car has been dead before and lifting handle then turning on the passenger side lock 90 degrees popped it up?

Insert key in passenger door lock.
Turn key CW until it stops.
    Lift door handle.
Turn key CW against the resistance. Key will turn slowly, and the lock pin handle will rise slowly. Continue until the door opens!!

Will do. Issue is it really feels like we're going to break the key. like I mentioned, we're going to try and get a couple copies of the key and hope that this works. Any other tricks to help push the pin out?

You can spray a can of graphite lock lubricant into the key opening, using the tube to go deep. BMW keys are very strong. You can attack and release the turning pressure.

I was sure it was not working ... until it did!

Well... what do you know... it worked. it worked damn well. So well it bent the key just a touch lmao. We had to use vice grips and then crank that sucker until we heard the pop and it finally opened the door.

Thanks for the push Shogun and e32 fan

good info. congrats. But a good functioning system should not need so much power. As you are doing maintenance on the car, I would also fix all doors locking system, clean the locking system from old hardened grease, replace all grommets 51211937233 and 52208238999 , more info here https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ight=door+lock

I once took the lock assembly apart, but I could not find the parts that perform this unlock function!

shogun could point to them. But he's shogun and I'm not.

I have not yet disassembled the lock like Johan did here http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/do...kMechanism.htm to get it working again I washed out all the old hardened grease, re-greased again and installed new grommets 51211937233 and 52208238999, that did the trick.

    2. Verbindungsstange zum ZV-Antrieb einhängen.
    3. Antrieb am Türaußengriff befestigen (Schrauben nicht festziehen).
    4. Drehfalle geschlossen. Schlüssel steckt im Schließzylinder. Schloß in Stellung „Zu".

    1. ZV-Antrieb im Zustand „Zentralgesichert" einbauen. Bei Wiederverwendung des ZV-Antriebs:
Antrieb am Stecker anschließen und Zentralsicherung einlegen. (2-maliges hörbares Klicken).
ZV-Antrieb läßt sich nicht mehr auseinanderziehen.
    2. Verbindungsstange zum ZV-Antrieb einhängen, Schloß verriegeln.
    3. ZV-Antrieb fixieren (Schrauben nicht festziehen).
    4. ZV-Antrieb leicht in Richtung „Schloß verriegeln" ziehen. Dabei ZV-Antrieb mit der Hand zusammenspannen, damit Sperrklinke entlastet wird.
    5. ZV-Antrieb in dieser Stellung festhalten und Befestigungsschrauben mit vorgesehenem Drehmoment = 2 Nm festziehen.
    - Funktionskontrolle durchführen
    ===================================
The actuators operate by electric motor with one motor each for "locking" and "securing". For "locking", a stroke of at least 12 mm is available. A toothed rack retracts. For "locking", this toothed rack is blocked.
    Figure 6:
    ZV driver's door drive
    1 Drive pinion
    2 Gear wheel
    3 Motor with pinion
    4 Locking motor
    5 Housing lower part
    6 Eccentric
    7 Pawl
    8 Microswitch (pin contact)

Each actuator is connected to the safety rotary latch lock (SDS) locking lever - in the front doors via a connecting rod. On the rear doors, the actuator on the E 34 is connected directly to the lock.
to the lock on the E 34 and via a linkage on the E 32. The safety lever disengages the release lever of the SDS, i.e. the lock is operated "empty". The actuators of the front doors also contain a microswitch which enables the driver's door locking knob to be used for locking and unlocking. The passenger door locking knob can only be used for central unlocking.

The actuator for the tailgate has only one motor for the lifting movement because it does not have to be secured.
The microswitch* in the actuator allows the vehicle to be locked and unlocked centrally from the tailgate as well - but not secured. Conversely, the tailgate can be unlocked at any time when the vehicle is secured, because the actuator is moved mechanically by the locking cylinder.

Repair instructions on the door locking switch, setting instructions: E32/E34
    1. install the central locking drive in the "centrally locked" state. Connect drive to plug and engage central locking (audible click 2 times). ZV drive can no longer be pulled apart.
Attach connecting rod to the central locking drive. 3.
Attach drive to outside door handle (do not tighten screws). 4.
    4. rotary latch closed. Key is in the lock cylinder. Lock in "closed" position. Mechanical emergency release must not be engaged, as this would cause tensions in the linkage.
Push the CL drive as far back as possible (in the direction of "Lock"). At the same time, press the ZV drive together by hand so that the pawl is relieved. Tighten the drive in this position with the prescribed torque = 2 Nm.

    - Function check -
Replace/adjust drive for rear left or right door lock Setting instructions: E32/E34
    1. install the central locking drive in the "centrally secured" state. When reusing the ZV drive:
Connect drive to connector and insert central fuse. (2 audible clicks).
ZV drive can no longer be pulled apart. 2.
Attach connecting rod to ZV drive, lock. 3.
Fix ZV drive (do not tighten screws). 4.
Pull the ZV drive slightly in the direction of "Locking the lock". Clamp the CL drive together by hand so that the pawl is relieved. 5.
Hold the CL drive in this position and tighten the fastening screws to the specified torque = 2 Nm.
    - Perform function check

shogun and E32FAN have together solved the emergency unlock mystery!

When the right side door key is turned to the extreme CW, the hooked rod that connects the key assembly to the lock assembly is pushed, and this is what lifts the lock pin. Happily, this overrides the deadbolt in the lock motor unit. This hooked rod is installed on the right side door and not the left side.

We should all open the right door card and lubricate this hooked rod, so it is working smoothly the next time we need it!!
