I have a dear friend with an 89 325ix. She is complaining about very hard brakes, she was told by a local mech. that the master cylinder was shot and that she needed a new one. After searching for months to try and find one, a new one was located . It did not fit the application, so another search revealed there were 2 potential part #'s for the car. The second was ordered and she was told it would not fit and the booster needed to be replace for the new master to fit.
I am now told that they initial symptom's would indicate that it was a booster problem. The question now is! Is there a special vacuum pump for this vehicle, or something else I should be looking for. Any help is appreciated.

AFAIK it's a regular brake booster, I wonder if they even bother to look at the check valve and the vacuum line going to the booster.

If the got the right master cylinder I don't understand how it wouldn't fit. I checked fcpeuro.com and it appears they have some aftermarket options in stock for the ix for $200.
Otherwise I don't think a brake booster is cheap, but I think the ix might have a unique booster compared to the 2wd versions. That could be the issue.
Like dworthy suggested I wonder if they checked to make sure the vacuum lines are intact.
Guy's thanks for info, I agree that the initial brake inspection did not consider the booster and associated lines. Still working on this problem. Will keep advised.
