It's the kind of issue that drives you nuts. We have a 2006 X5 with a 4.4 engine. It starts fine when cold, but when you turn it off after its warmed up, it will turn over fine, but will not start. I changed the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor (the connector looks like new), but the problem persists, I do not know where else to go. The issue seems to happen when it is damp outside. An indication that there is a problem is when the temp gauge pegs hot, but is is not overheating. Thanks for any help with this gremlin.
Just noticed, the fuel gauge also pegs out to the right.
I see a lot of views but no response, surely you guys have some idea? Has anyone experienced some link to the Crank Sensor that has a poor connection, wear, or chafing? I point to that since when it does start it will run forever with no issues (other than gauges pegged to right). Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated, even if its "that's weird, never saw that before", thanks again...
Is it throwing any codes? That might help pin it down a bit more. I’d go with electrical gremlins, or a fuel pump beginning to fail if it wasn’t for the temp gauge. That is an odd ball symptom.

Thank you for response, I'll look closer at codes. I've been running it for months with this issue hoping the fuel pump would completely fail, lol, but it hasn't.
It was my fuel pump, intermittent, impeller seemed to have a labored spin. 2004 e53 150k miles
Lucky to always dropped out in my driveway 3 times, never on the road. Even a pressure gauge can fool you.
