I Have a near mint X5 with the third row and heads up. I cant afford a 6k used motor that may suck a belt or spin a bearing a week after installed... some people here might have seen a ghetto build I did on youtube 12 years ago it was a carbed E36 5.0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkzCVNufeuw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0gV17du2zw
I don't have any technical questions really. I have come quite a long way in the almost 12 years since i built that car in my moms driveway at 19 years old for 2k. Is there a reason nobody has swapped an E70 I'm not aware of?
Looking forward to being maybe the first! Thanks in advance
Will it pass your local inspection when done? If so, do it! We had an E70 4.8i and it was great but a little more power would have been better — if not a turbo small block than at least a larger displacement NA motor. Should be plenty of space in there for a domestic with tiny 2 valve heads.
I live about 70 miles outside the city in a very small town of 800. No Emissions! If that ever does become an issue i can just transfer the title between me and my wife every year or two. My basic plan so far would put the LQ4 at about 460HP based on a few ls builds i read online. The engine and trans are already pulled. this weekend I'm gonna throw a battery back in the shell and see what interior features work with the drive train gone and then take apart the front axles so i can use the outer stubs to keep the proper tension on the front wheel bearings so they don't fall apart. Engine shopping next weekend. i have a wrecked 03 E39 Touring I'm parting out that hopefully covers some of the cost.
Swaps on the X series chassis are rare for a few reasons. While the X3/5 isn't "rare" they're not insanely common either. The average owner is your getter soccer mom. Then you have the AWD aspect. If you're wanting to go to just RWD, then it's "easy." Keeping with the AWD aspect you run into a few things. Do you keep the original transmission and transfer case, or go with something unique. Options galore. Either way, good luck, have fun, and take lots of pictures.
One reason these swaps are not as common is getting the chassis modules to play nicely will be difficult. Although, E90's do have LS swap kits and the E70 and E90 are electronically very close, so it can surely be done
Replacing a good engine with a completely different engine just on the hunch that "someday the motor might go bad" does seem a bit odd to me as well... preventative maintenance/upgrades would be more prudent, imo... https://www.maloindustries.com/produ...ection-plate-1
Bearing failure is also not a common issue on that engine. The N55 is a fairly durable engine, especially when not highly modified
