looked at a used E46 that is SULEV. Im in NY which is a SULEV state .
So the fuel pump and fuel tank in a SULEV E46 are one unit. Its supposedly covered by the
SULEV warranty .
im not even sure that gas tank- pump part is even available
IM certainly not converting it to non sulev
Seems there is the potential for a fuel pump failure in a 2004 SULEV to be a car killer
any help appreciated
didnt realize the warranty is 15 years. we are no longer under warranty
If the pump fails, you can always install a M54 fuel tank and pump, just bolts right in.

The E46 SULEV does have a non-serviceable Fuel Pump in the tank. The Fuel Tank is no longer available as a new part. The warranty was 15 years or 150,000 miles - whichever came first. At this point, it's a crap shoot buying a E46 SULEV. I recently came across a 36k mile E46 - but passed over it as it was a SULEV.
It's not that easy.

This is why the SULEV cars are practically worthless. The tanks were $6K when they were available.
Conversion is doable but I think you have to change out all the fuel lines, as well as the tank. I'm speaking out of school. I've read the procedure somewhere and it didn't seem worthwhile unless the car had some sentimental value. IMO.

It is doable. It is not that hard (many harder projects on this chassis!) but lots of parts. Here is a guide:
