I have to turn off the radio manually or else it will stay on, even if the key is removed. It is 2002 540i. Is this radio coded like that, or it is faulty?
Ignition switch maybe.

If it started doing that out of the blue, then I agree with philly that it could be the ignition switch (check other usual suspects like the sun visor lights and such). If it's an E39 you recently bought I'd check the wiring to discard a crappy aftermarket install from a previous owner that could've tapped the wrong wire. Some of the cheap Android units take long time to boot up and feeding a constant 12v is the "solution" I've seen some people going for.

Could also be the unloader relay in your trunk. It uses ign. b+ to switch battery b+ to electronics in the trunk. One would think that would keep a lot more than just the radio powered up tho.... Battery would discharge pretty quickly too.
