Blasphemous! Asking about buying an e46 in the e36 forum!?

Pictures of destroyed e36 or it didn't happen.

Check Craigslist, possibly in the warm weather states. This time of year, a trip south from NY and a road trip back in a new-to-you E36 might be a good thing :-)

So, most important things, RUST and COMPRESSION TEST. If they say no to a proper compression test then walk. One is an auto the other a 5spd, auto's can always be trouble but the 5spd car is a little more suspect because the owner didn't have it long and the previous owner did some cooling system work (needs to be compression tested.)

The internet — Craigslist, Facebook, others. No secret E36 places. Anyone here or other BMW forum knows the value so you might find a nice example but no great deal. And if you were just looking for a nice example at any price you would not be asking. I agree that an E46 might be better for the OP.

Man, most of them are so rough at this point. You're gonna spend a pretty penny for anything in decent shape. How much are you looking to spend?

I would use autotrader.com, cars.com, kbb.com, and others that are similar. I've never used Bring-A-Trailer, that's something you might look at too.

On these sites, you can search for the years of the E36, or narrow to the years of the E36 that are also OBD II, whatever. I would not buy this car from a dealer, you will pay more and get nothing for the expense. When you buy from a dealer, there's a certain period of warranty that the dealer will not be able to honor and he will charge for stuff he's not going to do. He also has "floor costs" and expected profits. When I sell my car, I have no floor costs and I just want to get out from under the car, so my pricing is lower than the dealer. You are looking at a car that might have been taken in on trade then sold to the dealer at auction. Avoid the middle men and buy Private Party. Once you have told the site what you want to buy, you can open or tighten the search radius to see more or fewer cars. If you have to drive to get a car, you might take a pickup truck and get a trailer from Uhaul to bring the car home since you are buying an unknown that would be annoying if it broke on the way back to your house. If you buy a car that's 50 miles away then drive it home, but if you go 500 miles to get a car then maybe the trailer is a good idea.

I have a Red 1996 328is that I am looking to sell. It’s DEFINATELY a sweet car!!!! I LOVE it but I am a single mother and have been doing all the repairs myself and it’s getting to be too much. Hit me up if your interested.? I’ll keep checking on this forum to see if any interest. Thanks and I’d hate to see it go but ……
