What cable use to connect INPA on pre-lci e39?

I need to read codes on my father's 1997 528i, but I see that it is equipped with round 20 pin adaptar under the hood, whereas for my e90 I use K-DCAN 16 pin inside the cabin.
What do I need to be able to connect the e39 to the laptop with INPA?

I was thinking on this adapter from ECSTuning and use it with my actual KDCAN, but not sure if it'll do the job.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

When you jam that connector in make sure it does not push out the wiring pins out the back side....

From the factory on models with the round port the OBD2 only connects to the TxD II line which contains the DME. The rest of the modules are on the TxD line which is accessible via the round port

All the adapter does is bridge the TxD and TxD II lines to allow communication with all modules. You can just bridge the two lines yourself with a short length of wire as shown below and reinstall the cap - then you can communicate to all modules via the OBD2 port. I do this on all my round port cars. I even had the "jumper cap" installed on my engine swapped car for ~6 months during initial testing so I could check various modules and readouts easily at all times

If you don't believe me, take your multimeter out and continuity test your round port adapter at the pins that the jumper wire above is connecting

With this method you can easily check everything while sitting in the car and use the cable you are currently using for your E92 (assuming it has the switch on the cable itself)

    Thanks for the input!

Ok so as I understand, with that adaptar from ECSTuning which allows to connect the e39 to the laptop through the K-DCAN cable I will only be able to communicate with de DME but not to the rest of the modules.
And to be able to connect to the remaining modules I just need to bridge the two lines with a piece of wire inside the round adapter, as shown in your pic, and always connect to the laptop through the K-DCAN cable.

    am I correct?

    That is correct

All the round port adapter cable does is bridge those pins inside the adapter. If you bridge them yourself, you don't need the adapter and can communicate to all modules through the OBD2 port.
