Before you ask, No, I'm not parting it out, and no, I'm not selling it without the Sport wheels. All or nothing. If no one buys it, I'll fix it in the Spring when I'm less busy. Not in a hurry. It's sitting on the trickle charger in my garage, staying nice and toasty and I'm starting it up every few days to keep the fluids circulating a bit.

UPDATE: In mid-December someone stopped short in front of my wife who was driving the car at the time. The hood, driver's fender, and radiator core support are bent out of shape. Luckily the cooling system wasn't impacted and she was able to drive the car home just fine with no fluid leaks or overheating. I managed to pull out the hood and the radiator support. The latter is pretty close to its original position and the fan spins freely without any contact on the radiator or shroud.


I've sourced two silver fenders, a radiator core support and an AC fan (in case that needs replacement as well), and I'm including them with the car. After that it would need a hood, and at least the driver's headlight. I would replace the radiator/fan/fan clutch and the main hose that goes from the radiator to the thermostat/block with this repair preventatively, but you can make a decision if you purchase the car. I can arrange for showings with some notice.


History:


Carfax (LINK) as of 12/20/22. I'm labeled as the 6th owner, but I'm more likely the 3rd or 4th as this car changed hands from Auction house to one or two other owners within the span of a month before I purchased it. The guy I bought it from in LA had plans to convert it into an M5 wagon, but he elected to use a 540 Touring as his base instead. This was originally a California car that I had shipped to NYC to serve as my growing family's primary vehicle for transportation. I've spared no expense and maintained it with an open checkbook for the past 5 years. I'll be including a binder with receipts totalling over $25K in service and parts as well as a link to all the receipts and a spreadsheet for quick reference. I've not tracked it, not lowered it or driven it hard in any way (I have a weekend M5 for that kind of fun). It remains mostly stock, with a few OEM+ additions. This has been our comfortable family cruiser.

Wheels:


Recently refurbished by Renewed Finishes in PA: 6 wheels in factory brushed metal & clear powder coat finish (barrels), oem silver powdercoat (faces). 17x8 (4 fronts), 17x9 (two rears). All new nuts/bolts hardware was purchased and installed on all 6 wheels. The trunk also has the original 17x8 spare. (7 wheels total). The staggered setup was wrapped in Continental summer tires back in the Spring of 2022. The refinished wheels and tires have about about 2K miles on them. The other two fronts that were refurbished remain wrapped in plastic and will be included as spares. Cost for Refinishing totals over $1800 and the tires cost about $1000 installed. That's not counting the value of the unfinished staggered setup of 6 wheels which would be around ~$1000-$1500.

Final Thoughts:

We were already on the fence about getting a minivan for our growing family as it will offer more flexibility, but this fender bender is the ultimate nudge for us now. I hope this wagon lives on under someone's loving ownership. If you're thinking you want to do an S62 swap, don't forget that you'll also need an M5 or 540i bottom end so a 540 wagon might be a better place to start. If you want a very well cared for Touring from BMW's golden era that needs a little bit of TLC, this is it.
