Not sure if BMW just expected their owners to blow up their gearbox before the dirty fluid could be blamedMy ZF 5-speed in my E36 M3 said "lifetime" as well. I changed it years ago at 110,000 miles and was glad I did. It was super dirty and was tough to shift in cold weather even after warm up - after changing it that issue went away.

everything and nothing is lifetime fluid. the lifetimes ends when the fluid stops working.
