I was disappointed by the last set of Sachs struts I had. They were bottoming in a short time. Cheapies on mine now, Monroe, but holding up so far. Ride isn't as nice as the Sachs before they failed. Maybe I got a bad lot.
Curious to know others experience as I'm expecting this job on my "new" E39.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
I have a pair of Sachs coming my way in a few days. Ill post something once I’ve swapped.
I remember Monroe as a good brand but haven’t bought any in a long time.
It says 24 months of warranty on the Sachs, but that means little if you have to do the job all over again.

$222 vs. $130 seems like way too big of a price difference for the same sku number. hmmmm...
I replaced my two front Bilstein HDs with Sachs from FCP a few years ago, and no noticeable change in performance since installing them. Ross - maybe you inadvertently got a set of bad ones or knock-offs of inferior quality.
FYI, I went back to Sachs because one of the HDs locked up at ~60% compression in under 50k miles.

I put a set of Sachs on the front of my E39 4 or 5 months ago. I replaced the originals which, at 180K, were completely blown out. I really like the ride. Not harsh, but not too soft. I replaced my rear Sachs with Sachs maybe 3 months back. I don't think I really needed to, but wanted all four corners to be of the same vintage. I hope they last because those rear struts are a colossal PITA to replace. I do like the ride they give. I put a set of KYBs on my E46 and I think they are too harsh. I think if I had to do it all again I'd use Sachs on the E46, too.

Added the non sport Sachs to my 528i at 96k
restored the handling and ride control one expects from a BMW
the OE ones were gone completely

During that Black Friday joke they (RA) actually raised the price to $160? Very weird.
If RockAuto started selling knock-offs they wouldn’t be in business for long.
EDIT: just by looking at the pictures I would be more suspicious of what sachs struts FCP sells. The RA has the red or blue tape on them. Fcp has not.
