Hey all. Just curious as it looks like my tank once again has cracked or blown up somewhere. It is a Meyle - Behr Tank. A couple of questions. Where is the most common failure points on these? And what is a good aftermarket tank that is as good or OEM as BMW?
Thank you,
Tom
An 88c thermostat also helps keep the pressure down allowing the plastics to live longer.
Purplecty do you have a link for this thermostat. I don't want to error. Thank you
What year is your e38?
Happy to be corrected but a 2001 740i will be the M62B44TU engine in which case fitting an E38 740d thermostat will bring the engine temps down into the 80's and is a bolt on replacement. I did this with my 2001 Alpina B10 V8 which has the M62B46TU engine.
For an earlier M62 (non-vanos) engine the best advice is to use the E31 Gulf version thermostat I believe.
+1 on the 88c Euro thermostat -- that was the third thing I did after I bought mine (a window regulator & chain tensioner were the first & second). You can get a genuine BMW Euro one from ECS for $120, and yes, it bolts right on to the M62TU.

Interesting. I remember reading about this a while back and thought it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Just a little more info on the E38 740d thermostat replacement; depending on the date of the firmware in the ECU some M62TU ECU's can recognise when the electronic thermostat is unplugged and throw up fault that triggers the dashboard fault indicator. The way round this is still to buy the 740d thermostat but also buy a resistor that you connect into the thermostat loom connector to convince the ECU all is ok - I haven't the time to check at the moment but the info is out there if the dash light comes on. I suspect it actually only affects 2002 E39's onwards but I'm mentioning it just in case it occurs.
This is the plug and play resistor you can use
