Can the rear hatch glass mechanism trigger the "trunk lid open" warning?

A while back did some work on the rear hatch glass on mom's '03 525iT, and ever since then the "trunk lid open" warning has appeared about 10 seconds after driving anywhere after starting the engine. The warning goes away after a short time, only to return the next time you drive the car. I don't recall the exact series of events that led up to this, but I recall working in the hatch area a couple times to replace trunk struts - once to install some "good" used ones and once again to install some new ones. At some point I also adjusted the locking mechanism for the glass because it wasn't coming snug against the rubber seal and was rattling. I don't think I've work on the main hatch latch at all that I can recall. I've also tried the "reset" method of tripping both latches to the second click with the window/hatch open but no luck.

So is the problem possibly with the glass? Or is the warning only triggered by the hatch? I looked in the owner's manual and there's no info on it.

Not from what I recall. All of my hatch wiring has broken at this point however, so I have all sorts of weird issues with my hatch.

Everytime the car wakes up the glass popper activates and opens the glass, neither of the exterior buttons work to open the glass and the wiper of course doesn't work either. Wiring is where I'd start.

My guess is broken wires at the hatch hinge. My winter beater is doing this now also.
A bit cold to dive into at the moment.

OK cool I will dive back into that at some point soon. It's been ~80°F here in San Diego, so I've got no issues weather-wise to deter me. And frankly the warning is really just an annoyance, though it would be nice to be able to trust it should the rear hatch actually get left unlatched. More importantly I'd like to get the rear wiper and washer working again.

I just tested it out on my '99 540iT. Driving off with the glass popped open did indeed trigger the warning in the OBC.
