    Windshield Washer Reservoir

So I have a slow dripping leak in my windshield washer reservoir.
What’s the most common problem with these? It’s at the very bottom below where the pump mounts.

Is there a washer at the very bottom between the pump and the reservoir?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes there is a thick washer/strainer that sits in between. A new one will stop it for a while but unless that white plastics horseshoe strap holder is holding the pump perfectly it will eventually leaks again. On my 530i that reservoir provides fluid for the "intensive" cleaner that is shot every 5 (?) times for regular fluid. You will still have washer fluid if that runs dry (and you keep your main reservoir filled)

There is a grommet at the point the pump inserts. As I recall on early car also another perforation for the under hood "gauge". Be careful removing the pump as its plastic elbow and attached hose are always brittle at this age.

^^^Yes. Very gently remove the 90 degree elbow at the bottom of the pump first. At that point you will see the grommet/washer/strainer thingamabob. Buy a new grommet and reinstall before installing the pump. This will give you more leverage. Then reinstall the pump. The pump neck seats into the grommet making the seal. I did all this before I realized my issue was the washer lines under the hood were broken.

Step one: Parts ID: http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E39-Sedan Yes, BMW hid it under Vehicle Electrical System all the way at the bottom.
E39's may have two tanks, Big one hidden in the RF wheel well (rear towards door) and the other under the hood (Intensive Washer System)
The BIG tank has 1-3 pumps, one little pump for the front and one big one for the Headlamp washers (if equipped).
IF you have an E39 wagon there is a second small pump for the rear window wiper/washer)
If you have headlamp washers - There is a BIG pump attached to a large line that runs under the inner fender to the nozzles in the bumper.
Under your hood there is a SMALL washer tank (If equipped) that is a secondary pump that is activated by the switch on the end of your washer stalk. Would you like to know how that works? Hoses - lots of them see images below
Sprayers - two versions (With Intensive - two hoses to the nozzles and without Intensive - one hose to the nozzle)

Step Three: Everything you ever wanted to know about nozzle alignment, washer pumps, seals, screens, filler pipe, washer hose lines (upper and lower), electrical etc. Pre-winter inspection of my 2002 windshield washer system

    TIPS:

Clean jets with a sewing pin as you have wax in them. Blow out with LOW pressure air.
Remove and flush out washer tank with a diluted Clorox mix 1/2 cup to 1 gal tap water)
Each pump has a little screen w/gasket - Clean each Great time to replace them.

I'm actually surprised that the tube/elbow fitting for your intensive cleaning reservoir is still intact!

I had a leak there and the problem was a split / cracked plastic on the pump and had to buy a new pump. Also did all the gromets at the same time.

There is an internal seal on the pumps that go bye bye after XX number of spins.
