While replacing my drive belts last month I came across a bad bearing in my water pump, prompting me to perform a complete cooling system replacement. I forgot how "loud" these old cars are compared to modern cars (many of which have electric water pumps anyway) so I never even heard the bad bearing until I had the belts off.
Well, here's a look and listen at a failed and growling water pump from my e28. It turns out that the production stamp on the pump is 1993, so it gave nearly 30 years of service! Impressive.

Be glad you identified the problem before it disintegrated like mine did last year. It spat out bearings into the turning cooling fan, and into my brand new radiator breaking off four fan blades and puncturing the radiator in two locations.
