Hey everyone, been trying to research and figure out which fuel pump to get for or my 1977. Presented with the common symptoms of loud whining to the point where it quit.
Based on records from the previous owner the pump was replaced. I took the pump out and found this.
Bosch 0590464126
Made in Czech Republic
Has the rubber mesh looking shroud. I looked up all interchange part #’s on all online part sites I could think of. Seems to pull up the interchange of Bosch 69430. Isn’t this for the later model E21?
Bosch 69488 seems to be what most searches pull up for the early E21.
Can someone clarify or add any knowledge on this? Looks like the 69488 is more expensive and not as available whereas vice versa for the 69430 FP.
Is there any harm to go for the 69430 FP? Easier for me to source this.
Thanks In advance!

I believe the difference is one (the early version) has an internal check valve, the other has a replaceable one.
Here's pictures of the cheap chinese ones to show the difference. I can't comment on if/how to convert from one to the other. I am using one of these on my early car and it's been trouble-free for a year or two so far, but I don't honestly expect it to last as long as Bosch.

Thanks for the visual, it looks like the PO switched to a later version about 5years ago.
Where did you source the Chinese pump?

Here is one that looks very much like the earlier ones with the internal check valve, $76, its alright to use the newer version. FCP Euro. I have seen many Bosch numbers on items they sell for different cars that are the same item. The one below is Bosch 69459. There you go can get Bosch one with check valve incorporated into the fuel pump.

Thanks for your input. Went ahead with 69430 FP and was identical to the one I pulled out. Replaced the fuel filter as well.
Install went well. Started up after few tries. Did require rich/lean adjustment on the FD and took it for a ride around the block and filled up the tank. Overall car felt and ran fine.
However when I got home I noticed the smell of gas when I got out the car, looked underneath and the accumulator was leaking steady drips from the part where the rubber braided hose connects. Did the accumulator fail? I’ve read that maybe the diaphragm inside isn’t able to hold the pressure which causes the fuel to go right through??
Should I go ahead and replace the accumulator? Should I replace the braided hose as well?
TIA,
Justin

Braided hoses are notorious for leaking down the road, change it to BMW rubber hose for fuel injection first and then check it out. Many part stores have fuel injection hose that you can buy by the foot on a reel. Accumulators don't typically leak when connected to a hose, there is a test for accumulators to tell if the diaphragm inside is leaking in faq's. In fact change out all braided hoses on the Y connector and be done from leaks in that area for good. Don't get fuel hose get fuel injection hose its rated much higher in psi for fuel injection purposes.

I just faced a similar situation in reverse. I was having trouble with warm engine starts, and the mechanic diagnosed a bad fuel accumulator. I replaced the accumulator and started smelling gas shortly after. Fuel was dripping out the back end of the fuel pump.
I replaced the fuel pump a couple of days ago with the Bosch 16121150201 (69430), and everything is running nicely again. At this point I think I should go ahead and replace the fuel filter before it starts malfunctioning. The accumulator and pump definitely appear to be original parts.
