Engine confusion

I picked up a random bmw engine out in the boonies for 25 bucks. great idea i know. I've worked with 60s, 70s, a little 80s, and 2000s American motors. First foreign motor and im stumped. The head has a 2.7eta engravment which i understand is a low rpms high torque diesel-esque motor. On the intake side of the head it reads 86 further down reads 1 264 200, and a 3. On the block itself it reads 1 278 921 257 84, then beneath that is a circle of abcdefgh with an arrow pointing at A. Another 3 is printed but right above where the oil pan starts. HH is besides the abc dial. Theres a machined area that reads 02955797 that i am unsure what means. The transmission is still connected and ive identified it as a ZF 4HP-22 And says made in west germany.
