Safe mode, shift gears, but won't go to fifth gear.

hi all.
my e36 328i 1996 automatic is entering safe mode, i not able to say specifically when it enters. when it enters in to safe mode, the transmission shifts into gears just fine, no clunk, but it wont go into to fifth gear. Driving on the highway, it shifts first to second to third to fourth but it doesn't goes all the way up to fifth gear.
Another thing I've noticed is the heat inside the car. The engine temp is right in the middle.
have someone ever experienced this before and how it was corrected?

there is no 5th gear on Automatic 1996 328i
