Hello, I have a 1999 540i wagon that has both the DME & EGS replaced with units from a 99 E38 740. ( I bought it like that. Kinda funny that ISTA thinks my vehicle is an E38, but yeah. ) My issue is, the EGS that is currently installed is from a 7-series without steptronic. My wagon has steptronic. So whenever I switch into “S”, it’ll remain stuck in 3rd gear and I cannot shift manually. Is it possible to reprogram the EGS so that I have the steptronic function? Or do I need to replace the entire EGS with one that supports steptronic already.
Thanks
I think you need a steptronic eggs. All US 540 Wagons came with Strptronic. Any clue to why this swap was done? Some EWS issue? That means you have the 98 7 series keys as well.
if your egs is the correct part number, it can be programmed.
I believe it was done either because the car was in a front end collision on the passenger side and the modules were destroyed, or because the ECU box is missing some grommets and misaligned (I assume due to the accident) and rain water corroded the modules. Either way, it’s got a DME and EWS from one 1999 7-series, and the EGS from another 7-series. I’m not sure if they swapped out the ignition key cylinder or driver door lock cylinder, they may have just swapped the little chip inside the key...
This car is a pain... total loss, body damage, leaking air suspension, trashed interior.... but basically got it free. Only reason I still have it is because it’s a 540i wagon and I am trying to save her.

I will look at part numbers tonight.
We’ve seen worse. Body looks maybe not too bad. Sac town - Sacramento? Leave the dme and ews alone. I would see if you can get an egg from a steptronic e39 - wagon or sedan 540.
The body doesn’t look too bad from far away hahaha. Get closer and you’ll notice something up. I’m going to try and find a used steptronic EGS. Thanks
I bought an egs today off a 2001 540i steptronic. Would it work for my 1999?
dude are you for real... why don't you check the part number. you can't buy parts blindly like that.
Realoem.com is your friend. Maybe is the answer.
