    M52 obd2 crank sensor question

Hello, I just pulled an m52b28 out of a 96 328i and found out that the sensor for the crank position is on the front of the motor. There is no hole in the back for one to be placed. Is this going to be an issue with the ecu? I have the matching engine wiring as I saw some threads discussing the use of a different wiring harness. Thanks!

You sure there's no hole in the back for it? Pull the intake and post pics. The sub harness is a separate piece that clips into the main wiring harness. You can buy it on ecs tuning

Euro 328 used a front crank pulley sensor. It is totally compatible to use instead. You can search for the part number but it looks like you already have one assuming the motor is really the 328 motor and not an older motor someone swapped in.

And 96 was a crossover year so some stuff doesn’t make sense… ETM will show “early” and “late” production but do not indicate a hard date, so often you need to chase both options.

Update: had a look at the code stamped on the block and found out it's a 2.5, so I have to assume that someone in the past swapped it for an m50. Ug. Explains why there is no hole! Thanks for the input

Is that the code that is the first 2 digits of 8 digits stamped by the passenger motor mount on the block? I think head stamping can be misleading.

Yup. First two digits of the code were 25. Lesson learned, the hunt continues
