Hello,
I know a private owner selling a 2006 BMW 530xi wagon, and before making an offer it would be helpful to hear some opinions from a forum of BMW experts. About the car:
-160,000 miles
-AWD
-good overall conditions
-minor mechanical problems (I have been told the owner brings it to the mechanic once every few months for minor problems that need fixing)
-has been mainly driven in California, so rust should not be a problem
1) Any idea of what would be a good price (4,500$?)
2) what problems these cars tend to have and how expensive the repairs might be
3) what things to check out when inspecting the car before purchase
Thank you very much to all
Could you afford a newer, more reliable car instead of a 16 year old BMW? I had a 2008 E61 535xi for 10 years and liked it a lot (and still maintain it for the friend I gave it to), but unless you can DIY, I would skip it.
If you insist, make sure the roof drains have been fixed. There is info on the internet. Not just blown through and the plugs pulled but also the rear hose fix. Make sure the trans has been serviced if automatic. A failure there will cost most people more than you are paying for the car. Make sure the Disa valve has been replaced. Change the diff oils and transfer case and brake fluid and coolant and PS fluid as well.
I am sure it drives well and looks nice and shiny and that it seems like a lot of car for just $4500. The maintenance and repairs will be as expected for the $50,000 car that it was new. If you can DIY, that makes a big difference.
Check for transmission service.
