Hi. I am hearing a loud grinding noise from my 94 530i and hoping I can narrow down the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am financially inadequit and don't know where to start. I have heard a few ideas. Below.
My temperature is normal and oil was resently changed. It drives ok, just sounds horrible. I smell anti freeze now when i shut the car off and hoses feel hot and full of pressure.
Does this sound like...
1) Water pump bearings? But wouldn't the water pump leak? or shake? Also, I have searched and found a new water pump is cheap, but to install is not cheap for a 94 530i because apparently this car is one of the most difficult.
2) Starter cylanoid? is catching on the flywheel? Can I replace a cylanoid? That sounds easy and inexpensive. idk
3) The chain that I see when adding oil under my oil cap
4) Tensioner for belts or the oil chain?
Inside the car, the noise is louder than ouside (it seems) Sometimes it sounded like water is boiling all around the front of the car.
Any advise, ideas or thoughts is much appreciated.
Thank you very much.

More details please: open the hood, have a look at all the parts and check if you see leaks of coolant, oil.
Use a cheap <$5 mechanics stethoscope https://www.harborfreight.com/mechan...ope-63691.html and check where the grinding noise comes from, with that it is much easier to find exactly the source of the noise, in case you do not have such a tool, use a long screwdriver as stethoscope.
In case the water pump bearing is making noise, one can usually see marks of coolant in the area under the water pump pulley.
Switch AC on and then off: any change in noise? In case no noise with AC off, check the AC compressor.
Same do with the blower fan.
