I'm considering buying a '99 540i that's been lowered. I would want to return it to stock height. Does lowering an E39 typically involve permanent modifications? Replacing the springs is no problem. If lowering it involved a sawzall, that's a problem. It's far enough away that I thought I'd ask before making the trip to go see it in person.
(First post here, but I plan to stick around.)
It probably depends on how it was lowered, and how much. But it’s not likely that a permanent change was made.
Lowering springs with stock struts and shocks can just be replaced with standard springs.
Coilovers MAY have enough travel to raise the height close to stock height.
So you need to first assess what was done to lower it.
No, theres no cutting, unless they cut the springs - in which case, you dont want the car. He probably has lowering springs or coilovers on it. Stock springs are cheap on eBay, and coilovers can easily be raised with the included coilover wrench.
