Hey so this is my first post on here but i have a 1999 528i sedan which is currently auto. Im looking to do a manual swap and was going to do it entirely myself. At the local junk yard there is a 2000 528i wagon and i was wondering if i could just use that as a parts car to get the manual swap done? Not in any rush to get it done right away but it is something im looking into doing asap. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated thanks.
Yes.
I daily drive an manual swapped '03 530i that I did 3 years ago.
If there is a manual 528i wagon in the junkyard, You should go grab all the manual bits and put your own swap kit together.
I believe everything is the same except the rear diff, but the wagon diff has a 3.07 ratio which actually is better than the sedan diff of 2.93 (in my opinion).
You will not want to use the Auto rear diff - again in my strongly-held opinion.
Here is what you need from the wagon:
-Transmission
-flywheel and clutch components
-driveshaft
-rear differential
-shifter assembly, boot and trim (top & bottom)
-Transmission elect connector with a foot or more of slack
-pedal box (clutch and brake)
-clutch and brake switches
-clutch master cylinder
-clutch slave cylinder
-clutch line - rubber /steel
-hose from brake reservoir to master cylinder
-Big rubber grommet covering auto shifter hole in transmission tunnel (remove insulation from below)
Grab all the manual swap parts while they are still available. These will be picked if you don’t act quickly.
