So since there is such a back log on the Michelin Pilot AS/4's in the correct size I have had time to think. Also looking at my car I always thought the rear 255/45's always looked a tad bit small. Also the new Continental DWS 06 seems like a stellar tire and an improvement over the AS/4 so it opens up that option as well.
I have been toying with 245/45 up front and 275/40 in the rear.
They are slightly smaller in overall diameter, 26.7 vs 27.1 stock, but match each other front to back so I don't think it will throw off ABS/DSC.
They are perfectly within the stock rim width sizes as well.
I also know there are people on here that have run them without a problem, some of the threads are really old.
Just starting a newer thread to have a more recent conversation.
The ideal is for 255/45 on front and 285/40 rear. But it is hard to find 285/40…..
I run 245 45 in the front and 275 40 in the rear on my mpars. The 275s replaced the 285s because when I was shopping the price was right for the 275 vs 285. I went 245 45 in the front which fits nicely with the BG S2 Lowering Springs in the front.
No issues at all! Last set was 235 50 18 on front and 285 40 18 on rear with no issues either.
The only reason I switched to 245 45 was due to the Drop springs added to the front. I may have been able to still swing the 235 50 in the front and if I recall, 235 50 and 285 40 have a nicely matching appearance vs the 255 45 rear factory spec. I found some old pics of when I had the 285 40s mounted before i dropped the front down. For some reason my 3.99 740i sport at the time didn't seem low enough in the front and they were confirmed to be OE sport springs so I installed BG S2s in the front to give it that raked look.

The problem is there are no all-seasons in 285/40 available right now. The best you can get are the 275/40. And then if you go stock 235/50 the front tire is a bit taller than the rear tire by more then a half inch. 245/45 and 275/40 are the exact same diameter.
On a side note I ordered winter tires for our X7 last month, just felt like getting them early just incase of shortages going into the winter. I was checking something else today and I don't know why but I looked up the tires I bought. Since I purchased them in August they have gone up $300 per tire!! Thats a crazy $1200 increase for a set of 4, the increase was more then all for tires for the E38.
Out of curiosity, what’s the reasoning behind going with wider for the rears vs stock? 235/255 seem to be in stock but the 275 are on backorder. Don’t need new tires at the moment but more curious.
Wider tires improve contact patch and grip for power delivery but also increase rolling resistance, decreases fuel economy and flings debris into the lower quarters. Am I missing something besides making it look like a hot rod?
