Hey guys so im planning on doing the manual swap in the future. Currently have a 5 speed tranny from the 328is not sure w model off the top of my head. But i have a guy offering me a 6 speed getrag 226 for 200 bucks. A six speed sounds cool but my first question is would that tranny even fit the s52 in my e36 m3?? If so what would i need.
226 can be 5 speed or 6 speed, I think. Among the 6 speed variants it is known as the 420G. Among those it came in 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder bell housing designs and manual shift and SMG shift. Find out more about what your friend is offering. SMG and bell housings can be changed but the typical DIYer could screw things up in the process.
Its a 6 speed manual. If its the 6speed would it practically bolt on? Id assume the bell-housing would only change in v8 situations, correct me if im wrong
Actually scratch that. Id have to find out what car it came off of and wether it was a i6 or v8 application and then go from there. And if it happens to be a i6 I’d have to look into how to adapt the tranny to s52.
I6 application would be the much better starting point.
Oh 100%! Thanks for the input!!!
you may need the drive shafts as the trany may not be the same length.
6 speed won’t be the same length as 5 speed. Will be longer trans so shorter drive shaft needed. Linkage may also differ. Trans brace is different. Clutch is different splines for 420G.
Hey guys so im having trouble identifying this transmission. Obv it says 226 but i was wondering if anyone could help or if i need more info on it. Ive been told its a 6 speed but im unsure if its the infamous 420g getrag. I would love to have a 6 speed e36 but unsure. If more info is needed ill upload more tomorrow. Guy wants 200 for it. But i was goona see if i could identify it based off of these images.

There should be a VIN tag on it somewhere to ID what it came out of.
Theres this white sticker and half the lettering is smudged out or faded as hell but other than that thats all the marking or stickers that are on it.
Here are some pics of my transmission after I pulled it and before I cleaned it up. These are the numbers you will see on the transmission.
