    Possible Wheel Bearing issue

    Hi Guys,

About two weeks ago I hit the mother of all pothole on the front left tire. A few days later I was hearing a noise like if something was stuck to my tire (wheel bearing noise). I took it to a garage who fixes Euro cars. He stated the front left wheel bearing needed replacing and did that.

    The noise is still there.

So I took it to a tire shop who check and confirmed both front tires and rims are ok, swapped left to right and the noise is still there.

I took it to another garage for a second opinion (including test drive) and they said it must be the wheel bearing as that's really the only moving spinning part.

But if the wheel bearing was replaced what is causing the noise?

They did say maybe the other person didn't install the wheeling bearing properly?

    Thoughts?

Most of the time you can check by loading up that side and see if the noise goes away. For example, if it's the left front, make a right hand turn or circle and if the noise goes away, then that points to a bad bearing. Also check the backing plates, as it could be rubbing the rotor.

Thanks for the advice. I drove it around Albert Park Lake which is in Melbourne Australia where I live, that's the F1 track as its a public road, very smooth. I did swerve tests and when the car is slowing down like if going down a slight hill the noise is more loud. Ill try making circle turns and see what happens. My car is getting inspected again this Tuesday and I really hope they find the problem and fix it. Such a great ride apart from this noise.

Older worn tyres will also make similar sounds like a bearing, but they tend to get louder when "loaded" from turning or braking.

So if the check comes back that the bearings on the right and left are ok and that the rims and tyres are OK, what else could it possibly be?

How old are the tyres? If they are original with the car, then yes they can be causing the noise. Click me! to understand how to find it on your tyre.

The car has only 26k on the clock and the tires would be original i guess. They look brand new and the tire shop found no issues. The car is at the shop right now having it checked over. I'll give an update when I get it back.

So just got the car back and confirmed the front tires have uneven wear, looks like they have been overinflated. Front tires have been put on the back, so much smoother now and noise gone. Getting 2 new tires on Friday.

Glad to hear that they were able to figure it out. Just in case somebody else finds this thread, uneven wear and older tyres tend to make noise starting at 30kph/20mph and up to 65kph/40mph.

I'm going to buy 4 x Bridgestone RFT in about a month. All tires are almost at the low tire indicator.
