I'm working on putting my strut towers back together and I don't feel like I'm getting enough threads screwed in with the strut retaining nut, if that's what it's called. I've got the Koni Sport Yellow Adjustables and only able to get a couple of threads screwed into the strut housing. Think thats ok or am I missing something? The nut was down a lit further on the old strut inserts.
A few quick thoughts
You can measure the old one vs the new one to see if there is a difference in height
Double check that you have the correct Koni part for your make and model
Make sure nothing is in the bottom of the strut housing
If you believe it is force - Use a pipe wrench on the nut to gain a bit more force (but first - try turning the nut all the way down - before placing the strut in - to make sure you are not cross threading).

Housings are clean and clear, threads are good and straight. Every website I've checked states these are for the E30 325i Convertible. They are taller than the ones that came out by about 1/4". They have a little tit on the end that I'm wondering if I can cut back a little to make them fit. I'm kind of wondering too if the PO didn't sway out the housings at some point even thought they look identical to every video I've watched in regards to replacing struts.
Just for resolution, got with Koni and they confirmed they are the correct inserts and gave me the go ahead to remove the nub off the bottom of the insert. Towers are back together and ready to be put back on the car. Just have to press the ball joints back in the control arms and we'll be ready to roll.
