Hello,
I'm about to replace the water pump and thermostat on my e92. And I noticed that the new pump from FCP (Pierburg) is seeping oil (looks and smells like some sort of gear oil). I thought it was a defect so I requested for a replacement. But the replacement pump looks like it is also seeping. Is this normal? I tend to think there is something wrong with the gasket or some sort. But this is my first time dealing with an electric water pump so I wanted to ask for a second opinion.
Thank you.
[Edit] I thought about it more, and perhaps the manufacturer put some oil to protect the pump. What do you think?

We have an E90, not this problem, so I was curious. If you google " e90 water pump oil leak " you get a lot of info
Thanks, zellamay. As you suggested, I was able to find the answer from google. Someone posted a youtube video on how to disassemble the pump unit. From the video, it occurred to me that the oil was used to lubricate the electric motor so that it won't rust while on the shelf. But I'm only speculating at the moment and waiting on FCP to get back to me to be sure as they are looking into it for me.
