2013 535i with about 85K miles - while driving loud bang/thump, car immediately undrivable. Stuck at a busy intersection. It's been towed to a local German service shop which doesn't open until Monday. I'm dreading either the timing chain broke, or transmission. At regular service, nobody said the timing chain (or belt?) should be replaced, apparently they can go 100K miles?
Hopefully I find out Monday, but what do you guys think? Either way, this has got to be big $$$...
Well, found out - engine and transmission ok. It was the rear differential $6200 fix.
Yikes, its as bad as the timing chain and gearbox. Get a used one and plant that in.

Yep, 6k even for new diff is robbing.
Just bought diff for my f10 and it was 160bucks. Used of course.
