2004 330i fairly new to me. It has the intermittent 2800ish RPM stumble / stutter that seems to be the common issue fixed with a DME Reflash / Update.
My question is... instead of doing the DME reflash from BMW, could I do an aftermarket tune that would override the mapping that causes the stumble?
To say it another way,
Say that I do a Dinan / conforti / RKTunes / etc tune without getting the latest BMW DME reflash, do we have any confidence it will get rid of the mapping with the stumble?
The reason I would avoid getting the latest BMW reflash is because that sounds like it will cost me ~$200 and a trip to a shop. If I get an aftermarket off-the-shelf tune I can load it myself and actually get some extra benefit for money spent.
I do believe that it was an active recall on them for that, just give the local dealership a call as it should be a free flash of the DME.
As for the latter, they tend to use BMW's initial map to get started, but after that it's all new software.
