Hello all, I've been browsing around some posts with similar issues with my Z3, but I haven't really encountered a straight forward answer on how I should fix my issue...
I've decided to start to use my Z3 after it's been sitting in my garage for a few months now. I've replaced the battery, and I tried to start it up, and it did on the first try. No signs of failure at all. My next step was to get gas in it, so I took it to a gas station around the corner, and pumped some fuel in it. Prior to fuel though, I turned off the car, and took out the key. Now when I was done fueling, the car did not want to start anymore. I wondered why that is the reason because it just started about 10 minutes ago and the car was running fine. Anyways a day later, I got one of my trusty mechanics to check out whats wrong with the car, and he said that there was *no spark* seen when trying to start the car. Yes it did crank, but no spark. He suggested to get the crankshaft position sensor replaced, which we did. The outcome was the same, it cranked, but no start. I went to my garage and got a tool that could show error codes from the car. It's cylinder shaped and fit in a connector in the hood, (Don’t know its name) and figured out that this code I've received translated to "EWS Message." I guess I know my car has some problem relating to the EWS system... I've been reading on a few of these forums and and watched a few videos and found out that fellow bimmer owners who had similar issues with their Z3 would somehow bypass/sync the EWS system by using a OBD2 cable with the INPA software. Can this surely be the case and the next step into getting this issue fixed? Has the EWS somehow enabled an immobilizer for security?
Thank you in advance, Vic.
PS: My car is a 2.5L 6 Cylinder if that helps... And its my first post too.

Go to the Z3 diagnostic thread and download the files. Everything you need to diagnose the problem is there. Also the software to fix the EWS issue and resync if necessary. There are a lot of helpful people here to assist.

I'll be sure to check that out. Very thankful for the reply!
Vic
Clear the code and then re-sync the EWS/DME pairing

Question, how do I know which one to use? MS43 for M54?
Random EWS issues are very unusual. Please post all the codes in the MS42 DME and in the EWS module.
These dmes don't just randomly lose sync.
I wouldn't jump on anything until a proper diagnosis was made.
Do you have rpm signal? Does rpm register on the cluster when you're cranking?

Thank you for your thoughtful reply,
When trying to crank, I don't seem to get any RPM's signal. The gauge or the meter isn't moving on my speedometer if thats the answer you are looking for. I will post the code shortly.
Thank you for taking the time to help me out,
Vic.
This is the photo I got after I checked for errors using MS 42 new
I am also getting an error code when just trying to navigate in the INPA software in general, "error code 19 no response from control unit"
Are you using the 20-pin port under the hood?
You should be using a 20-pin adapter to your USB cable for this.
Go to MS42 like you already have, press Shift + F6 to get to the EWS sync menu, and then click the F2 button, to reset the rolling codes.
This is unusual, but if you have communication to both modules (engine ECU and EWS) via 20-pin port, that will reset rolling codes.
*(if you're already using the 20-pin port and EWS module is non-reachable, then there may be issues with the EWS module itself.)

Thats all I needed. I've been using the OBD2 adapter this whole time so maybe thats why I havent gotten anything. Ill update once I get the 20 pin adapter.
Thanks, Vic.
Oh, and do you mind sending me the link of the cable by chance? I don't want to risk getting the wrong cable again.
Thank you so much for your effort so far.

I was using this cable the whole time, just fyi. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RM32XT2...roduct_details
Yea, you just need a "BMW 20-pin adapter"
For your car specifically though, you can temporarily forward the 2nd K-line to the OBD port with a piece of wire, so that way you'll have all go to the OBD port.

Got it! Ill update you when the part comes in! 2 days hopefully.
You can jump these two wires on the cap and reinstall it to allow you to use the OBD2 port in the meantime

The bigger question is how did you manage to unsync the rolling codes? That never happens.
I guess the rule always has an exception, so there we go.

Give a 16 y/o a car and a computer and give it a shot, I guess.
Thank you guys so much,
Vic.
Yeah I'll have fun alright, just try not to end up in the news. All I have to do is tidy it up, wash it, get new brake lights, and get a rear console lid because it’s kind of cracked. My dad bought it for me for around 2200, it was a steal and I'll be sure to take good care of it.

Wow thats a nice little car! I like the rear wheels on it. Gives it a different vibe to the car. Now I really realize what good of a car I got! Here's me taking it to the emissions.
