The car I own has a busted outside driver's door lock as a result of the previous owner's botched repair attempts. I tried fixing the mechanism a couple of times, even asked my mechanic to give it a try, but the best he could come up with was making it so that it was possible to lock and unlock the door... however the lock could be operated with any piece of non-flexible material. And it broke again after a couple of uses. The solution is to find a donor car and replace the driver's and passenger's locks, the trunk lid lock (which is also broken), the glove compartment lock and the ignition. I already came across issues when trying to fit a facelift door handle into the pre-facelift door so I guess it'll be safer to ask — are the locks compatible with all cars regardless of chassis and the production date or are there any details I should pay attention to? The car I own is a 1994 320i coupe.
You can use realoem to compare part number pre/post face lift, also realoem can show what years a particular part was used over.
Your not explaining your actual problem at all, you may not fix if by replacing the mechanisms. Take the time to explain what your seeing and what's not working.

Door lock assemblies and their associated tumbler changed somewhere in early 95 the best I can tell. You cannot install an early tumbler in a late lock and vice versa. So you need an early assembly. I have one and will ship if needed.

The new locks style used after ~1995 to replace a broken door handle with old lock style.
You can see the slight change in the lock design and mount thus not interchangeable but the new lock can be re-keyed to match the old key.
Or as I did swap the wafer myself because that is still interchangeable by you or a locksmith. .
